What is the best FREE Anti Virus and Spyware I can download?

I would like to get one of the free anti virus and spyware programs. There are so many and I just would like to know which ones are good and which ones I should avoid. I do want to be sure that whichever I get will remove malware (I don't know if they all do that or not). Any and all info would be great, as would personal experience and use. Thanks so much.
