How do I get rid of Norton Internet Security & Anti Virus?
How do I eradicate all traces of Norton Internet Security and Anti Virus from my PC including registry entries, hidden files and the like. In the past I've come to really dislike Symantec products, they seem to take over your computer and apparently impossible to remove all traces of even using the uninstall application. Now I just bought a new laptop and I'm horrified to discover it has a load of Norton stuff pre-installed. Grrr! How do I get rid of it before I install my preferred security software?
i suppose delete them or uninstall them by going to the control panel then add/remove programs. find the program and uninstall it. OR search it and delete it.
Web Filters
These are what most people think about when they consider protecting themselves or their family from unwanted content on the internet. Filters have definitely been around awhile. Most also have the benefit of keeping your computer safe from viruses and spyware. Let's take a look at some of the more popular ones:
Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2008
When it comes to virus protection and web filtering, Symantec has created a name for themselves. I downloaded Norton 360 trial version. The interface is attractive and it seems pretty straightforward. (I might as well let you know now that if a software is at all confusing or lacking intuitive manipulation, I get turned off real quickly.) This program comes highly recommended from different online news sites and the like. Lots of internet awards attached to this one. Despite all the work Symantec has done recently, Norton Internet Security 2008 is still pretty resource intensive. It felt like to me that this software was taking over my operating system.
Cost: You didn't think this stuff was free did you? $59.99 /per year

CyberPatrol from SurfControl
I had a hard time with this one to be honest. It was not attractive, and was a little confusing to get it started. I was not so impressed with it. I have a pet peeve when it comes to software that require more than a little configuration out the door in order to use it. After manipulating the program a bit to get it to my liking, it worked okay. I think that you may be a little happier spending the little extra to purchase one of the more comprehensive filters.
Cost: 39.95/ per year

Microsoft Parental Controls
Now this one surprised me. I'll be blunt, any software that is distributed by the M-word automatically puts my nerves on edge. However, after setting up the parental controls through my OS (Vista,) I found that they worked effectively and with no fuss. The downside to Microsoft Parental Controls is that you need at least a small working knowledge of how the operating system works, and you'll need to spend some time setting it up how you'd like. The best part about this filtering software is that it has no cost! (provided you use Microsoft Windows Vista...which has a cost...ah well.
Cost: Comes ingrained in Windows Vista

McAfee Total Protection with SiteAdvisor Plus
Easy to use, minimal configuring, attractive in its design and layout. McAfee has created a worthwhile product. It didn't take much effort for me to set this up to my satisfaction. It's intuitive and doesn't seem to take up much resources. McAfee's Total Protection seems to be what a web filter should be.
Cost: $59.99/ per year
Rating: 9/10
Web Filters do their job relatively well. However they are not perfect. It doesn't matter how technology progresses in this area, there are always those who will find ways to fool or work around filtering software.
