What is a virtual server?
A virtual server, sometimes called Virtual Private Server (VPS) or Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) is a method of splitting a physical server into smaller pieces so that it can be shared by several users. Instead interacting directly with the physical server, the customer interacts with virtualization software. Each virtual private server on the physical server runs entirely independent of the others, has its own operating system, can be independently rebooted, and has its own bandwidth and disk space. A virtual server gives the customer more independence than shared hosting but at a lower cost than a dedicated server.
What's a dedicated server?
A dedicated server is physical piece of equipment leased to one customer. It is a private server. All of the resources of the server (disk space, bandwidth, RAM, etc) are assigned to one customer. A dedicated server is the most expensive hosting option but it provides the most space.
What's the difference between a virtual server and a dedicated server?
Basically, a VPS is like a smaller, less expensive version of a dedicated server. A virtual server provides you with the same features of a dedicated server, but at a much lower cost. With either option, you'll have root SSH access, the ability to install custom software and applications, the option to reboot, and complete administrative control. Instead of controlling all of the server's resources (disk space, bandwidth, RAM, etc.) as you would by leasing a dedicated server, you'll lease a portion of this space. It's ideal for users who want the same features of a dedicated server but do not need all of the space.
What is shared hosting?
With shared hosting, your website is hosted on a server with many different websites. Shared hosting is the least expensive and most common type of web hosting, and can be ideal for clients who have low-traffic websites and do not need root access to the server or to install their own software. Since the server will host sites for many different clients, a shared hosting package will include server administration, which can be a plus for those who don't want to deal with administering their own server, but a hindrance for those who need more administrative control. Shared hosting may not work for clients who have high-traffic websites as it is not always possible to isolate each website from other sites that share the server.
What are the differences between Virtual Server Hosting
and shared hosting?
irtual private server hosting is ideal for developers or other users who want the control to install their own software and configure the server to their needs but want a more economical option than a dedicated server. Shared hosting is a more economical option that VPS hosting, but will not give you any of this administrative control. With shared hosting, the limitations of your server will be determined by the hosting company. With virtual server hosting, the server is yours, and you can use it in whatever way you need to.
