Learning to play chess is one thing, but becoming very good at it is another. You must know that becoming good at something like chess takes time.

Several things make the difference between good players and great players. To become a great chess player, you not only need to know the capability of every chess piece and different moves, but you also need to practice, practice and practice even more. That's why magnetic chess sets are so advantageous...you can comfortably play chess anytime and anywhere. Magnetic fields, created by small magnets inside the bottom of chess pieces and a thin metal plate under the board, are used to keep the chess pieces in place, allowing you to play while riding in any moving vehicle, like a car or plane. On the other hand, it is sometimes good to analyze certain chess games. You should find time to analyze different game plays and the mistakes you tend to make. The best chess players can remember every step of the last few games but the regular player can have a tough time to remember even one game. This is why it is nice to analyze your game after you write everything down. If you analyze games like this you will be able to learn easier.

Aside from having great recall, chess masters can also play chess by just using their mind; they don't need to have a chess board in front of them. You would be able to remember some great games of great chess players and replay versions of these games. One way to do this is by buying and studying good chess books.

Do keep in mind that every chess game is different and following a certain pattern is sometimes not very realistic. You can, however, see some situations in the game come back, and this is where you can create some sort of action plan. What you could do is try to recreate games which are explained in chess books. Do this alone and in a peaceful environment, so you can focus and master the strategies.

Try to apply your newly acquired knowledge in your next game. Playing against different opponents is a lot better for development of your skills since playing the same person over and over causes for too much familiarity. You would only be teaching the same person what you can do so he can anticipate your moves in subsequent games. It is also possible to get bored and lose focus, and therefore, remain at the same level.

By joining a chess club or even starting one, you can play against a variety of players more often. With a club, you can find like-minded people who like the game as much as you do.

In addition to the social aspects of joining such a club, you will have an endless supply of different opponents to play against, some better than you and some not. In a chess club you can expect to learn things a lot faster, and at the same time you can teach others. Many friendships are started at chess clubs because people with common interests are naturally drawn to each other.

Keep in mind that magnetic chess sets are one step towards practicing more often, which means that you can get more experience and become a better player.
