In recent years, sportsmen have gradually been trending in the direction of optical attachments for rifles that use high levels of magnification. It is not unusual to see magnification levels of 6-24x, or even higher. While "the greater power the better" theory is widely conventional in areas such as vehicle horsepower, it is often a mistake for sportsmen to follow this theory in their hunting.
The past norm for power levels in rifle scopes, at least for deer hunting, was 3x to 9x. Using 3x power, a sportsman is able to accurately take close shots at less than 50 yards, which is a common distance when hunting deer. These days, however, it is increasingly common for sportsmen to employ 6x to 18x magnification rate, often higher - but the higher the level of rifle scope magnification, the narrower the field of view becomes. With 6x as the lowest rate of magnification, it is practically impossible focus on moving target at a distance of thirty yards.
At 6x power, a deer will appear 6 times larger than it normally would to an unassisted human eye. At a distance of roughly thirty yards, a hunter is going to be gazing through his rifle scope at a brown patch of fur, making it practically impossible to zero in on an aiming point. Not only do sportsmen in this position find that they are zoomed in too close to the target, but obstructions are magnified at the same level as well. Trees and brush are frequently encountered obstructions in deer hunting situations, so a person hunting a deer that is already over-magnified has to now overcome a three-inch stick that just morphed in to a deer's eighteen-inch hiding place
Now, while it is evident that in wooded situations, dealing with smaller distances, a high powered scope isn't always ideal, that doesn't mean these scopes do not have a place. High magnification scopes are optimal for open shooting environments that are largely free of obstructions, and targets are often at 250 yards or greater. Ranges of rifle scope power of 3x-9x work excellently in environments like these. Hunters can step it up to 18-24x magnification when the shooting distance increases to 400 yards or more. Much of what goes into deciding on the optimal rifle scope is a hunter's preference, but hunting environment is just as important, probably more so.
These days there are more scope models to choose from than ever, and rifle scope manufacturers are developing an growing number of rifle scopes with high magnification. The rifle scope selection of Zeiss Conquest, for example, boasts 64 scopes, and more than half of them have a 3.5x magnification level as their lowest level. Even the reasonably priced Burris and Bushnell scopes are now available in 20x zoom and higher. Leupold scopes are widely popular, and they sell a rifle scope with a range of 8.5x-25x.
The wide selection of rifle scopes available to choose from today is wonderful, but sportsmen need to shop wisely, based on firing situations and environment. Remember, "greater power" does not always mean "more useful".
