You bought a shiny new laptop and you are excited to use it! The only problem is, it is using Windows Vista Basic instead of Windows XP that you are used of. What is this Vista Basic and why does it seem to start up and proceed with its process slower than the average XP?

Windows Vista Basic, the title captures the essence of this operating system. It is for the satisfaction of basic computer needs at home. It does not have all the features of the Vista Home Premium. Due to its simplicity and straightforwardness, it allows you to find your programs easier. It also protects better that the Windows XP as it is programmed to defend against malware.

Noting these positive features, you cannot completely appreciate them because of the relatively slow performance. How do you speed up Vista Basic? Here are 5 easy to follow ways on how to make the overall performance faster and better.

• Remove unnecessary applications not in use

Check your taskbar for applications you are not using. For example, you are reading your e-mail while watching TV. If the taskbar shows that you have your Windows Media Player also running, best to close it entirely. Also take note that some messengers that you rarely use may start up with your Vista Basic so you can also exit these if you are not using them.

• Don't be Vista Features hungry

Vista Basic, although the barest among the other Vistas, is still chock-full of features that may be wonderful for some but pointless for others. Here are the steps on how to remove these junk:

1. Click on Control Panel.
2. Choose Uninstall Program.
3. Left side, choose the option Turn Windows Features Off.
4. The Vista Features will show.
5. Review the list carefully on which features you would be using and which features you will not. If you are unsure of one feature's usage, you can search its use up on the internet. Do not be afraid to uncheck a box as you will not be deleting the feature, you are merely disabling it.
6. Finally, hit OK.

• Turn off the automatic defrag

The settings of Vista are defaulted to have an automatic defrag after 4 start ups. This is very inconvenient especially if you are rushing to finish a project or you're late for an online chat with your loved ones. To disable:

1. Click the Start Menu
2. Find the Control Panel
3. Choose System and Maintenance
4. On the Administrative Tools tab at the bottom, click "Defragment your hard drive now"
5. Grant permission to open the disk fragmenter
6. Unclick "Run automatically"
7. Click OK

• In connection to item 3, better download Auslogics Registry Defrag. You would still need to defrag your own files to avoid disk fragmentation that causes slow performance. This freeware is a program that defrags faster and better than Vista's own Disk Defragmenter.

• Use CCleaners when doing a disk cleanup

Keeping your disk clean helps contribute to a faster performance. Doing a Disk Cleanup with the tool Vista Basic has will be okay however it does not go as far as clearing invalid registry keys. Download CCleaner, this is free software that can do both, clean up temporary files and do away with invalid registry keys.
