would anyone recommend using the dummy guides to learn photography?

i have a good eye. but don't know anything about manual settings!

or should i just pay £600 for a 5 day course!

Personally, I do not think the fundamentals of photography can be learned in 5 days. It doesn't matter how much you pay, it is no guarantee that you will learn & retain everything by the end of the course. I believe the better investment is the dummy book -- assuming that you are actually dedicated enough to really read it. Basics like aperture (ex: the f/2.8 that you are referring to), iso, focus modes, etc, can even be learned for free from your camera's manual &/or other free internet resource sites. Just google something related to "digital photography basics", & "photography how to", & "photography beginner's guide." I can't recommend an individual site, as I do not know what else you are looking to learn beyond the basics of photography.

Another longer term option is to take a community college course, which is great because you will get structured guidance, as well as some pressure to actually read & produce work for a much cheaper price.

Either route will cost next to nothing vs. £600, which means that you can still resort to taking a course should all else fail (or if you are still interested in taking the course at a later date). On a side note, I have attended a couple different seminar courses & have a thought on them. If they have sponsors (ex: Nikon, Adobe, etc.) be aware that naturally they will also be pushing some propaganda -- making you feel that better or more equipment, software, etc is also needed for better pictures. While this could possibly be true, be aware that for 9 out of 10 beginners, understanding the basics is really what is needed.

Bottomline, attend the course if that is the only way that you will learn the fundamentals. If you are able to learn from a book or community college, go that route & save yourself the money (for now). Once you know the basics & know what types of photography you desire to do, you'll have that extra money to help purchase your needed equipment! Good luck with whatever route you choose.
