How many generations can you trace your FAMILY HISTORY/GENEALOGY?
42, but some of the sources are suspect due to the Black Death and the fury of the Norsemen.
Ronald Joseph Berding, a South Florida managed-care executive who created an industry powerhouse from five moribund health plans, died June 23 at age 60 of a rare abdominal cancer.
Joe, as everyone called him, came to Florida from his native Kentucky in 1987 as CEO of the Louisville-based Humana's Florida operation. He left in 2001 to transform a group of health plans losing $120 million annually into VISTA Healthplan.
By the time VISTA was sold to Coventry Health Care in 2007 for $685 million, the plan had 295,000 members, 850 employees, and was generating $1.2 billion in annual revenues.
Berding retired and moved from Miramar to Pinecrest with his wife of five years, Geri Diaz Berding.
He'd had 12 healthy years following the initial assault of his deadly cancer, retroperitoneal liposarcoma, in 1993. Surgeons removed a 25-pound tumor from his father's abdomen, said son Chris Berding.
"All the big shots gave him six months to live. There were 40 documented cases and he was the only survivor.''
Berding influenced both the managed-care industry and state policies toward it, said Tom Wyss, a healthcare consultant who worked with him at Humana and VISTA.
"Aside from running the most successful health plan in South Florida,'' Wyss said, "Joe was instrumental in taking health-plan issues to Tallahassee, where they didn't have significant representation like the hospitals had, and getting those issues in front of legislators in such a way that made it clear they were not out to make money but to cover people who couldn't afford healthcare.''
Berding earned a bachelor of arts in accounting at Louisville's Bellarmine College while working at a convenience store, said sister Sharon Sellinger of Plano, Texas. Humana later sent him to the University of Louisville Law School.
He began his career at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kentucky, then joined Humana, originally a hospital corporation, now one of the nation's largest consumer health-benefits marketers.
In retirement, Berding collected old maps, played online poker, and researched his family's history.
"Genealogy was his hobby,'' son Chris said. "He traced the family back to Abraham Lincoln's sister,'' to the Hayden family, which founded Kentucky's Old Grand-Dad distillery, and to Scotland's early 14th Century king, Robert the Bruce.
When he felt well enough, Berding played poker at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino near Hollywood, and last year placed 68th of 2,700 players in a minor World Series of Poker event -- $1,500 a point, his son said.
After his death, tributes poured in from former colleagues who remembered Berding as a big-hearted team player, the unusual top executive who knew hundreds of employees by name and cared about their lives in and out of the office.
In a note for a family memory book, Humana employee Regina Davis spoke of Berding's kindness in helping her work from home after she fell seriously ill while serving as Grievance and Appeals Manager in the Miramar office.
"He stated that 'you have been loyal to Humana and now it is our time to be there for you. . .' He asked me to stop worrying about my job and concentrate on getting better, which was not an option I could see at that point in my life,'' Davis wrote.
Wyss, formerly VISTA's chief financial officer, said Berding quietly paid for an 82-year-old Humana employee's funeral and "would write checks on his own'' to workers who needed money but didn't meet human-resources guidelines for company loans.
In 1991, Berding launched an initiative whereby Humana hospitals in Broward and parts of Miami-Dade counties donated uneaten food to food banks.
Arthur Hipwell was Humana's general counsel in 1987 when the company was trying to buy International Medical Centers (IMC).
Once the nation's largest Medicare-certified HMO, IMC collapsed after founder Miguel Recarey, Jr. -- under indictment for wire-tapping, bribery, and embezzlement -- fled the country, leaving $300 million in pending claims.
Under Berding, IMC "became the single most successful acquisition in Humana's history,'' Hipwell said.
The secret to his success was simple, according to son Chris: hard work, "getting the right people around you, and not being afraid to make decisions. He did that, and more often than not, he was right.''
In addition to his wife, son and sister Sharon, Berding is survived by brother Tommy and sisters Beverly Kernan and Laura Blizard, all of Louisville, and stepchildren Maritza Diaz and Jorge Diaz of Miami.
A funeral was held.
