Do "speed reading" techniques actually work? I was considering buying a book on speed reading?

I am already a fast reader, but I want to be faster. Does anyone know if "speed reading" is actually something that works, or if it is a scam? Thank you!

Being a product of "alternative" or "new" educational ideas, I was taught speed reading. While I can read fast, I don't retain info as well as others. It teaches you to skip words or "skim" a paragraph, picking up only key words...which is why I don't retain as much info. It is helpful when needing to learn something fast, or weed through a large amount of info to locate a specific item. And while I love to read, my knowlege is more of a "cliffs notes" variety while others can go into great detail. I guess that makes me a woman of few words

I also have the ability to remember where to locate specific info in a book. i.e. middle section of the book, bottom half of a page, etc... but I'm not sure if that's just a visual learning skill or really associated with speed reading.

Most individuals have turned to speed reading to achieve this with exceptional results. Unfortunately, there is a common misconception that increasing your reading speed is a tough and often painful process. Use speed reading online tests to test your current reading speed. This will help you to analyze your reading speed and provide you with immense scope for improvement when you log your reading times. This is a good way of keeping yourself motivated. Make sure that you are taking necessary breaks in between and not stressing yourself out. One key point with taking these tests is to ensure that you are doing in a conducive environment.

Training yourself with different techniques

There are different techniques that ensure speed reading. Using them properly will enable you to speed read efficiently.

· Prioritization of reading material: Prioritizing your reading essentially eliminates any unnecessary reading. To speed read, rank the materials on the basis of priority according to the ones that are extremely important, moderately important and least important.

· Skimming of text: The main areas of the text of the material you are reading needs to be skimmed and filtered properly. In this way your speed will be enhanced. Turn your attention to the headings and subheads. Keep a note of the important keywords, questions and notifications. Not every word is important, so don't read each word individually.

· Focus your mind: Focus completely on the reading material so that you can comprehend it faster. Your mind needs to be very clear and sharp whenever you attempt to speed read.

· Avoid re-reading: Train yourself in such a way that you are not re-reading. Practice reading in blocks.

· Reading with your finger: Smooth movement of the eyes is extremely important and hence practice reading with your finger.

· Practice and push your limits: You need to continuously practice reading faster and once you are comfortable with a certain speed, take a chance and push your limits.

· Avoiding highlighting text: Avoiding highlighting certain chunks of sentences or words when you speed read. Contrary to popular belief, highlighting does not improve the speed of reading. In fact, you tend to read the same sentences twice in case of highlighting text.

Apart from these speed reading techniques you must also keep in mind a few things. You need to adjust your reading speed on the basis of the materials at your disposal. You should not rush through the material, especially if you are studying something that demands special and critical attention.
