How do you get middle grade students motivated in math class?

The students I teach in math have in the past taken for granted that they are passed to the next grade level whether they earn the grades or not. I'm new at this school and I can't get them to understand how low they are in some math areas and it's only hurting them by not caring. What I need are some activities which will show them that math is a necessity for success in any occupation they may choose.

#1 Make sure they know YOU care about their skills. They can spot a phoney a mile off. (and that you don't care because it makes you look good of course, which seems to be why they think a person caresin the first place.)

#2 Look into the Maths300 course from Australia. Hands on. High interest and Motivation. Highly adjustable skill levels.
Originally develped for Aborigional students, has applications for everyone. Takes an innovative approach to teaching math. Huge range of skills and abilities covered, yet can be individualized also. I taught at a Native American school that started using this. Students had a great response, i even had one student tell me math was fun again. It's not textbook math though, so be aware this can be a BIG criticism from parents and others. However, you can pick and choose to use different lessons as they fit in your prescribed curriculum. It's very adaptable, needs time though to get kids thinking outside the box again. Log in as a "guest" to take a look.

SPARE THE ROD AND SPOIL THE CHILD

 

I understand that the happiness if being blessed by a child could be one of the dominant reasons for everyone to smile amongst the ample reasons blessed by Al Mighty Allah. The motive here relates to the character building, education and teaching of children. The general philosophy for children is based on this belief that young children are like plants, in other words what you will sow today you will reap tomorrow.

 

There are many things that are involved in positive character building of a child, and parents play a major role in that. In my opinion the first most kindergarten of any child is home life. The parents could stimulate potential growth, thereby helping children to recognize and use the things they understood instinctively. In addition, giving liberty to a child to do any thing is essential, by this a child could acquire confidence, good social habits and learn to do things independently.

 

Parents should remain central in the expanding social world of middle childhood, they continue to support their children’s self-esteem, define and reinforce values, promote academic success, enable participation community activities, and offer a sensitive ear and perceptive judgment. They should provide a reliable backup as their children face the challenges of middle childhood, this act of parents mounts an un-demolishing confidence in children.

 

On the other side, if the parents enforces or restrict the children to do as they want by means of physical punishment or other harassment, the children on getting young and having develop their own sense of self, will increasingly come into conflict with their parents. The way parents handle these conflicts, influences the quality of their relationship with their children.

 

Generally, we see that when parents frequently exercise power and authority to overcome their children’s assertiveness, the children comply but are also likely to become angry and frustrated – and to be insolent when the parent is not present. Often, children of parents who use physical punishment act aggressively toward others.

 

During middle childhood, children acquire heightened capacities for judgment, social understanding and self-awareness. At the same time, the social world of middle childhood broadens beyond the family to include the school, neighborhood and other influences. Children begin to perceive themselves in multiple roles and relationships besides those to the family, even though family relationship remains central.

 

In conclusion I must say that everything we know from the study of children’s development indicates that moral identity is promoted by multiple social influences that guide a child in the same general direction throughout life.
