i uninstalled norton systemworks because of a fault,i now want to reinstall it,but i get,failed with error code 12,and then,failed to register file types,then error1722 problem withinstaller package,
any ideas what is causing this.

what is your opinion of norton systemworks?

ONLY the cleaning side of it NOT the anti virus etc. how good is the cleanup side? please no opinions of bloatware etc. thanks in advance

I enjoyed it until Norton kept sending me messages to buy a new license. I uninstalled the virus part but still use the tools. I don't get anymore popups to renew either now. I use: Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic

My Computer is Running Slow - Help!!

Everyone that has worked with computers finds this out at some time or another - the computer that you thought was so fast when you bought it, is now running along with the snails - and losing!

Whether you have a Windows machine or a Mac, this is a common problem.  The computer gets slow and needs some help.  So how do you help your "old friend?"  Let us look at some of the causess of slowdowns and address how to deal with them.

First on the list is the simplest one - you have filled up your hard drive and it needs to be defragmented.  When hard disks get 80% full, they start getting slower.  One tool that some people immediately go to is the disk defragmenter or optimization utilities.  This may or may not help.  If your drive has only 20% of its space left, some defragmenters just won't run, period.  Windows disk defragmenter likes to have around 25% or more free space to do its job.  So your first task is to archive your old data files and put them onto CDs or better yet, DVDs and store them in a safe place. 

Most computers have a program to backup your data, but it is really better to simply copy the files from your hard drive to a DVD + R or DVD - R disc.  If your are concerned about only having one copy, make a second and label both copies appropriately.  For example Word Documents 05/09 to 07/09 would be a good name for the disc containing your MS Word files from May to July of 2009.  After you have backed them up, open a few files to verify the copies are good, then delete the originals from the hard drive.  You should also do this for installation programs and any other data files you no longer use.  You will be surprised how much junk you had on your drive.

Once you have removed the unneeded data, you need to verify and repair any errors in the hard drive's directory.  Use Windows Checkdisk to do this and Apple's Disk Utility to Verify and repair disk permissions.  This type of utility should ALWAYS be ran BEFORE defragmenting your drive.  Otherwise, you risk losing some of your data or programs.

After you have repaired the directory structure, you can move data around without worrying about losing it.

As time goes by, your files become fragmented,  and the hard drive has to move around a lot more to read each file, because the file is in several pieces.  Once the files are together, the hard disc doesn't have to work so much and data can be retrieved more quickly.  This results in faster computer operations and less wait time for you.

You are now ready to defragment the drive.  On the Mac, you could just wait for the system to defragment itself (files under 50MB are defragmented over time) or you can use Techtool Pro, DriveGenius, or iDefrag.  With Windows, you can use Disk Defragmenter, Speed Disk (part of Norton SystemWorks), or Diskeeper are good choices. 

Run the defragmentation utility on your computer - make SURE you allow LOTS of time for this.  Most of us start our defragmentation operations late at night just before bedtime - this way It can run all night, if need be, and  you have your computer ready for you to use the next day.
