Mastering Website Graphics: Problems And Solutions

by Ian Traynor

I’m a professional webmaster and in this job I have to cope with many different types of tasks involving website design and maintenance. Quite frankly, a webmaster has to be a “Jack of all trades”, and naturally, some of the jobs I find more difficult than others.

Lack Of Expertise

Of all the jobs associated with developing and running websites, the one which I find most challenging is the creation of graphics for my websites. Like many people, I am not particularly artistic. Also, some of the top-end graphics programs, such as PhotoShop, have a very steep learning curve, as well as being relatively expensive.

The general lack of graphics skills is very evident when you look at the many websites built by amateurs. They really haven’t grasped the importance of having a well-presented website. If they are selling something, they are unlikely to gain the confidence of potential customers. Would you buy from a person who cannot present a professional appearance on their website? Probably not!

The Need For Website Graphics

A major reason is to make the web pages more readable. A big block of text is harder to read than one where the text is broken up by good-quality, relevant images. This applies to blogs and content-rich sites as well as those aiming to sell something. People will not stay on a website if it is difficult to read.

Good quality images are also important to give a clear picture of something that it being sold on a website. Even if it is a digital product, delivered electronically, an image of a book cover or a software box can greatly increase the chance of making a sale.

Hiring A Graphic Designer

I do this when I can spare the money, when I need an exceptionally high quality graphic - and when I can wait the days and weeks for a graphic to be prepared.

Then there’s the question of how to find a good graphic designer. They will need to have the skills to produce graphics for the web, which are different in some respects from the skills needed for off-line graphics. Also, since each designer has a different approach to design, you’ll need to ensure that you like their particular style. Have a look at the work which they have done - and make sure that they can do the work for you to meet your own deadlines. You don’t want to be waiting for the designer to complete the work before you launch your site.

Using Pre-Made Graphics

All over the web you will find sources of pre-made graphics, such a banner headers, bullets, buttons and royalty-free photographs

The trouble is that the same graphics get used time and again on different websites, and people will soon realise that you are a “cheapskate”! Not a good impression to make! Of course, you can use your graphics software to modify pre-made graphics. If you want to make certain that your website stands out, you need to have access to valuable content that is relatively unique. But again, changing graphics takes time and skill. Like many people, I am short of both of these!

Also, it can be quite hard to track down the good sources of ready-made graphics. A lot of the stuff on the web is pure rubbish!

My Solution To Creating Graphics For Websites

I’ve been a professional webmaster since 1996, and so I’ve spent a lot of time tracking down good web-based sources of graphics. And in recent months, I’ve found web-based services which go a long way beyond just providing clip art and royalty-free photographs

Some of these online services are quite remarkable. There are services which let you create your own badges, buttons and banners without needing artistic skills. There are services which let you do amazing transformations of existing photographs. There are sites which let you design your own website and blog templates. The list goes on - and new online graphics services are appearing almost daily.

And they are all completely free!

I started off by just having a list of these services. Then, I found it easier to bundle them into a bit of software that I built so that I could quickly select and use these website graphics services. I made sure that I could update this software easily as I located new services.

Before long, my friends found out what I’d done and asked me if they could have a copy of this software. They said that it was amazing and why didn’t I try to sell it. The rest, as they say, is history, and it’s become one of the most popular pieces of software that I’ve produced in my “Webmasters CheatKit” range.

Japanese Tattoos: The Hot Looking Japanese Dragon Tattoos

by Sara Smith

Japanese dragon tattoos are popular. The dragon is definitely hands down one of the most beautiful and powerful of all the mythic beasts. The sheer beauty and power of these mythical beasts alone warrant there attention as tattoo designs. Then being combined with a long and rich history of tattooing as an art form such as in the Japanese culture and you have a winning combination. If you are contemplating getting a Japanese dragon tattoo then you should spend a little time learning about the deep history and symbolism of the beautiful and mystical beast.

Great Ideas For Dragon Tattoo Designs

Dragon tattoos are amazingly flexible and the look, feel, and design choices you make an give a totally different symbolism and feel to the dragon. A fierce fiery red dragon with a red body wrapped around a large samurai sword will symbolize strength and power. Whereas if the dragon where high in the sky flying above some beautiful mountain lake then the design might represent freedom and peacefulness. So the symbolism and what the dragon design portrays is really dependent on the stylistic choices you make when designing the tattoo such as look, feel, location and etc.

The History Of Dragons In Japan

Dragons are a fundamental mythical animal or beast tot he Japanese people. In the Japanese language dragons are referred to as “Ryu” or often “Tatsu”. They of course are large yet slender serpent looking creatures. Often they live around large bodies of water such as the ocean of a big lake. They are well respected as a creature that has tremendous power and therefore the Japanese believe that the very first emperor of Japan had descended from a dragon and therefore is partially god himself.

Like many of the east Asian countries dragons have a long tradition in Japanese culture, art, architecture and literature. There are numerous stories, temples and shrines where dragons play a central role.

One can see the improtant role that dragons play in Japanese culture through their extensive sculptures. It is common to see statues of dragons at an alter, temple and other places of worship. For example at the Sonsoji Temple in Asakusa Japan the dragon statue is one of the most predominate features. An even more famous spot is at Miyajima also know as The Isles Of The Temple. This temple is a famous spot for travelers, tourist and religious. They all come here to pray to the dragon and ask for good fortune and good luck in the up and coming year.

At the Sensoji Temple in Asakusa Japan every spring is a very special time of year. It is rumored that way back in 628 AD two brothers were fishing along the Sumida river. During their fishing trip they discovered a beautiful statue of Kanon the Goddess of Mercy. At the time they made this discovery a gold dragon flew out of the Sumida river and up into the sky as a way to mark such an important event and such a big finding. Thus every spring the dragon in taken out oft he Sesoji temple and then paraded around the temple grounds.

In both Buddhist and Taoist religious traditions the dragon is seen to also represent the hardships that a spiritual pilgrim will have to face in their journey towards enlightenment.

The dragon can also be foudn throughout Japans great literary works and is a prevalent image. For example there is the famous tale of Yamata-No-Orochi (an eight headed serpent) and Susanoo (the man). Yamata-No-Orochi is an eveil beast that devours young women whole. Until Susanoo is able to trick the serpent. He gets the serpent drunk and then is able to successfully kill him.

As you can see form above the dragon is prevalent throughout the Japanese culture and their are many examples of this mythical beast in the art and architecture. The dragon can also be found throughout many of the more traditional tattoo designs. Thus gives you a wide variety of options to choose from and can help in getting the perfect tattoo you want. The most common location for a large dragon tattoo of course is the back. This makes a great back piece and the design can be done very large and therefore with a lot of detail. However you are not locked into only getting a back tattoo. If you want something a little smaller or for whatever reason don’t want a back piece a dragon can easily be done on your shoulder, calf, and even a sleeve tattoo design.

How To Obtain Free MySpace Layouts

by Chris Channing

Luckily for MySpace users, the free MySpace layout revolution has no end in sight. It’s a big industry for both designers and consumers who wish to have the best and latest in MySpace designs, but don’t want to spend anything as a result. In this case, the free MySpace layout industry has indeed catered to the every wish and whim of the casual consumer.

As most MySpace layouts are indeed free, the question arises as to what anyone would do with a paid MySpace layout. There are indeed situations where a paid MySpace layout is necessary. A business, proprietorship, artisan, or even just a creative individual may opt to get a paid MySpace layout, as this usually means that better quality is observed. However, free MySpace layouts are in most cases the better decision.

It is almost unreal to think that some of the selection of today’s MySpace layouts are indeed free. Since Macromedia Flash can be used to build MySpace layouts, we are now all seeing a shift to free MySpace layouts that feature Flash as their base. Flash allows for much more rearranging, effects, and styles to be applied- much like a paid MySpace layout would be, although many are free!

Even in the midst of paying and obtaining MySpace layouts, there is some thought to keep in mind. Not every paid MySpace layout will be as good as a free one, and vice versa. The real moral of the story is that free MySpace layouts are often no different than paid alternatives- meaning you may be better off siding with free alternatives.

Even better for those who know how to edit their profiles is the fact that free layouts give them a chance to have the “foundation” of a layout, and then they can expand on the foundation to create their own visually stunning layout. Because creating the foundation for a layout can be time consuming, this is a very good option for designers who want to skip the boring coding and get straight to designing their MySpace layout.

It has become common for MySpace resource websites to include ads in the profiles that they give for free to consumers. This is often just a small image or text ad that tells others where you got the new MySpace layout from. Since the layout was indeed free, it’s often best to honor the wishes of the resource website and keep the ad to show your support of the free MySpace industry.

Final Thoughts

It doesn’t take much to find a MySpace layout- and it is just as easy to find a free MySpace layout. What MySpace users have to gain from paid alternatives is very little, especially when concerning the fact that a little editing on the user’s part can make any free layout just as unique and interesting as paid routes. It just goes to show that a little work can go a long way, and the best things in life are free.

The Importance Of Celebrity MySpace Layouts

by Chris Channing

MySpace layouts have been a very popular business over the past few years- but celebrity layouts have been by far the most constant in popularity. It’s hard to find a MySpace layout without also finding celebrity layouts- so what benefits come from such layouts- and why are they so popular?

Out of all the celebrities that are featured on MySpace layouts, celebrities that are new to the entertainment industry are usually the most popular among MySpace addicts. This means that because celebrities are so plentiful, finding a celebrity MySpace layout in question is no hard task at all. The real problem, MySpace users attest, is sifting through all the results that come from searching for celebrity layouts.

Statistics show that younger children are much more likely to make use of celebrity MySpace layouts than others- most likely because they are more probably to idolize a celebrity than others would. Females also commonly opt for such layouts, although men and adults aren’t immune to the celebrity MySpace layout craze that has been sweeping the MySpace community.

The best part about celebrity MySpace layouts is the fact that they will commonly have many results for the same celebrity. This means if you have a certain style you like in MySpace layouts, such as a color or pattern, you will be much more likely to find something that suits you with celebrity MySpace layouts than layouts of other genres and subjects. While this usually holds true- it isn’t always certain, and searching through results is often the only answer to the problem.

The best part about celebrity MySpace layouts is the fact that graphic designers can cater to one’s needs, without anyone ever having to touch a bit of CSS coding or graphic editor programs. Graphical editors and programmers commonly target celebrities with their works, since they are indeed so popular and the audience for them is vast. This means that, on average, celebrity layouts usually look better than counterpart layouts.

When celebrities start to fade in popularity, it is common for their demand on MySpace layout sites to go down. When demand goes down, then other celebrities will likely take their spot in search results and rankings. In that case, it’s important to keep up to date on your favorite MySpace layout resource site, as it can be the first indicator on what is hot in the entertainment industry, and what isn’t.

Lastly, the MySpace celebrity layout is more than just a MySpace layout- it’s a way for MySpace users to express their creativity and their aspirations, goals, or heroes in life. The classic celebrity layout has been popular since the inception of MySpace for a reason- it’s hard to find anyone who doesn’t keep tabs on Hollywood as we know it today.

Celebrity layouts for MySpace will continue to be one of the biggest and most popular categories in MySpace layouts. The only problem is finding unique and innovative layouts for the celebrity in question. But with a little searching and good will, doing so is easier than one may think.

The Benefits Of MySpace Quoted Layouts

by Chris Channing

Out of all the social networking platforms today, MySpace is credited with being the first and the best. MySpace allows users to create and use different layouts for their profile. Among one of the most popular layouts remains to the MySpace quoted layout- which gives many benefits to MySpace users.

As studies go, one is much more likely to see a quoted layout as being flashy or appealing to the eyes, as compared to other types of layouts. Other types of layouts aren’t necessarily flashy, and quotes can be put in the user-edited boxes that users fill information with. So to cater to the flashy needs of MySpace users, many quoted layouts will be parallel with popular culture.

They real treat in the whole process is that users looking for a specific layout will usually get what they want simply by searching for a quote. This may be a quote from one’s favorite author, musician, or other important figure. It’s very popular for MySpace quote layouts to feature lyrics from popular bands and singers that have made an impact on the music industry.

Quoted layouts on MySpace also give a certain benefit when users try to find new quoted layouts. When searching a website for a quoted layout, the search engine on the website will commonly return results related to what you searched for. This is a great way to find new books, literature, and songs based on what you already like, which is quite handy indeed.

Quoted MySpace layouts also give those who use them a certain sense of intelligence. Since quoting popular books, literary works, or other types of literature generally means that one is well versed in literature- this often gives the impression of their intelligence. This also gives them a chance to connect to others who have an interest in literature or good music, meaning it could help strengthen relationships with friends.

MySpace quote layouts also serve their purpose as an easy way to show what the user’s taste in arts is. It is common for one to obtain a MySpace layout, only they do not like the color, borders, or other attributes of the layout in question. But because the MySpace quote layout is usually much more targeted to the quote instead of a general audience, it is much more likely users will find satisfaction in what they obtain with the layout.

Lastly, love quotes in MySpace layouts have become all the rage in young romances and old romances alike. There is no better way to say “I love you” than to broadcast the message to all of one’s friends for all to see. Because this is such a romantic feat, love quotes in MySpace layouts are very popular, although more so among women than in men.

MySpace layouts are popular, but quoted layouts have become all the rage in the MySpace community. MySpace layouts with quotes featured on them seek to give MySpace users a wide range of benefits as aforementioned- the only thing to do is conduct a simple search and get started.
