Micro Businesses play a very important role in ensuring the processes of economic growth. They are employment-friendly, generating more and more employment especially rural and urban areas and they contribute to greater regional balance in levels of development.

According to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006, an organization will be called Micro Business, if the investment doesn't exceed more than 25 lakh rupee in Manufacturing sector and 10 lakh rupee in Service sector.

All over India around 13 million Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) have been registered with the State/UT Directorates of Industries. These MSEs form in to clusters in order to boost their competitiveness and to withstand the competition from large enterprises. India has over 400 SME clusters and about 2000 artisan clusters. Utter Pradesh is the state having more number (4,02,606) of MSEs and Sikkim and Lakshadweep are the states having less number (349 & 76 respectively) of MSEs.

These MSEs produce more than 6000 products ranging from simple consumer goods to the manufacture of many sophisticated and precision products like electronics control systems, micro wave components, electro medical equipments, etc.

Contributions of MSEs in India

India has a vibrant Micro and Small Enterprise (MSEs) sector with a total size of US$140 billion, are the driving force for the long-term growth of the Indian economy that plays an important role in sustaining the economic growth. According to the World Bank Institution, MSE in India contribute 45% to employment, 40% to GDP and 35% to exports.

Around 95% of the MSEs are industrial units and its present contribution to Industrial production is 39% and is expected to go up to 45%. MSEs share to national exports currently is 33%, which will increase to over 40% in next five years. MSEs providing employment to 322.28 lakh persons in 2007-08 and is projected to provide employment to 391.73 lakh persons in 2011-12.

Financial source for MSEs
The government has identified three important areas for increasing competitiveness in this sector: technology including quality, skills development, and finance. Of the three, technology and quality were to be focused, more than 15,000 MSEs have been assisted in obtaining ISO certification. The government is focusing on various schemes and policies for the smooth flow of the business.

MSEs get the financial support in the form of Incremental credits from Public sector banks, from Pvt./Foreign Banks and SIDBI/SFCs and from Emerging Sources (VC-PE, ECB, Factoring, etc.) Public sector banks are the major source in crediting the MSEs (around 58%). The government is taking measures to provide credit support and fiscal support and the credit flow has more than doubled from Rs.67,000 crore to Rs.1,48,000 crore since 2005.

In spite of the support given by the Government MSEs as a whole has been lagging behind in terms of growth and productivity. According to the results of the Third All India Census of MSEs with reference year 2001-02, the number of sick units during 2004-05 and 2005-06 were 1,38,042 and 1,26,824. The number of sick MSEs high in the states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Assam and Bihar. The main constraints, which the SME still face not only recession but also credit crunch and variety of regulations from Center, states and local governments. The private banks and financial institutions are still neglecting this sector.

A few days ago my PC suffered an attack that threatended to escalate. My PC became compromised just before Christmas. I wondered whether my passwords and credit card details would be stolen. Fortunately I found a fix for the problem.

The main symptom of the attack was the inability to use Windows Updates. Also the main antivirus software that I use (Norton antivirus) appeared to know that the trojan.VUNDO was present. It reported a fix, but almost immediately this was overturned and the problem reverted.

If the PC is cut off from security updates from the operating system provider (Microsoft) it will then become vulnerable to further more serious attacks. A criminal who knows you have been cut off from help from the software vendor support knows you are defenceless and that sooner or later he will be able to get to sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details. Your computer could be a goldmine for the criminal.

It is essential that when security updates become disabled you fix this problem as soon as possible. Do not postpone this even if the computer is operating normally in other ways. If you choose to ignore it the results could be disastrous.

The first thing to try is to download the updates manually, but in my case this was knocked out as well. My pc was totally cut off from help from the software vendor.

Another way had to be found around this problem. I searched Windows forums and discussion groups and soon came across a solution. It was a software package called Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.31 and it can be found at http://www.malwarebytes.org/. It fixed the problem quickly and has the advantage that it is free.

There are paid versions as well. Updates are brought out every few days and so they are clearly responding to new threats rapidly.

Criminals are continually developing malware, including viruses, trojans and worms with the object of stealing money from members of the Internet community. Fortunately there are companies like Malewarebytes out there fighting them. They certainly fixed trojan.VUNDO for me.

The History folder is stored in the Windows directory. C:\Windows\History

Right click on the folder and select Copy.

Go to a different folder such as
My Documents and right click on a blank space and select Paste.

If you only want to copy certain ones and not backup the entire History folder then open it up and copy/paste the individual files.

AVG is safe, as long as you download it from *their* site. as far as "any other free anti virus on the net" - you already know that answer - you already tried one that turned out to be a virus. Only d/l those that have been reviewed by mainstream publications, and have been out there more than 6 months.

PC World Magazine just conducted a wonderful test study on several antispyware tools, to see how they matched up against the latest "infections" on the web. We feature three of those here and their results.

The antispyware tools that were tested were Grisoft`s AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, Microsoft`s Windows Defender 1.1, and PC Tools` Spyware Doctor 5.0. They were run through a gammit of tests to detect whether or not the products can not only find and detect adware and spyware, but be able to clean them from your computer and registry.

They marked "Spyware Doctor 5.0" as the best buy. According to Ryan Naraine of PC World, "Spyware Doctor did an excellent job identifying and uprooting adware". Naraine claims the results in regards to spyware were "less than impressive", but were still better than the other products tested. Naraine says, "Spyware Doctor detected 81 percent of inactive adware samples and 100 percent of active adware samples, and it successfully removed almost all of the active adware samples." Spyware Doctor also classifies ad tracking cookies as spyware which, according to the test, flagged some items from sites like Google, Yahoo and the New York Times. It does lend itself to some areas of improvement, but for $30, you can`t go wrong.

The next product tested was AVG`s Anti-Spyware 7.5. According to testing the product faired well in uncovering known adware and spyware, detecting 19 of 20 of them, with the only one not found being the Banbra Trojan Horse, which shocklingly is the one that attempts to collect banking information. Even though the test showed that AVG deactivated 50 percent of the spyware files and registry entries, it only cleaned about 30 percent of them. Naraine says, "AVG Anti-Spyware is easy to use, with self-explanatory icons at the top of the main interface. On the downside, it lacks antiphishing protection to keep you from going to fraudulent financial sites looking for personal information, and it has no POP3, IMAP, and SMTP scanning to block e-mail-borne spyware threats. Also, you can`t set a system restore point in case you accidentally delete critical files during a disinfection routine."

Spy Sweeper 5.5 was next on the list, and as Naraine puts it, "Things have changed for the worse with version 5.5. The software demonstrates excellent behavior-based detection capabilities, but we were disappointed at how the program struggled to remove adware and spyware from the test PC." The testing showed the program only detected 85% of bad files and registry entries, and get this only 2% of ones relating to banking, and only cleaned up 25% of the adware problems and even worse 15% of spyware.

You would have thought, with Microsoft being the large corporation that it is, and having access to the underlying operating system level, it would have faired well. Apparently, the operating system level developers, do not allow the anti-spyware programmers to talk to them, I am just kidding of course. Microsoft`s Windows Defender version 1.1 ships free with Vista, and can be downloaded from their website if you are running XP SP2. In tests the program detected 50% of the infected files, mostly adware, and was able to remove 55% of the files and registry entries, according to the study. However, Naraine says, "In our tests the program neither detected nor disinfected the ten active spyware threats we introduced. It detected only 7 percent of the inactive password stealers we threw at it." The tests also showed that it did do a nice job with recognizing changes to the registry as well as to IE, but the test also showed that if spyware gets past its first line of defense, you will still need another product to clean it up.

You have some options depending on what you want to spend, and how much hassle you want to go through, however, you will want to implement some kind of protection if you plan on using your computer to surf the net, and of course...who doesn`t.

Here is the easiest solution to these PC irritant: search your system tray for the "Safely Remove Hardware" utility and use it; this will announce whenever an USB device is disconnected, and it will ensure that Windows will not try anymore to write data on thin air. This is only one tool, but you can always find other free software to master your USB drives, on the Internet.

Irritant: Perpetual Security Alert Messages

Even if your system has the latest virus definitions installed, Windows may still be babbling on about your system being at risk of an exploit or virus. This can sometimes occur when you disable a setting on your antivirus software. To prevent Windows from being so meddling and intrusive, you may opt out of receiving the security alert messages by clicking on the balloon alert message when it pops up, selecting Recommendations in the Virus Protection Panel; from here, select "I have an antivirus program that I will monitor" to put the alert messages out of commission.

Printer Messages Are A Hassle

A menial task like sending files to a network printer should not raise any problems, but still, this does not seem to be the case. The moment you give a command to the printer, Windows pops again letting you know that you are printing! It is easy to handle this nuisance. Just use Control Panel, Printers and Faxes. There, in File, Server Properties, you will see a box next to a message that goes like: "Notify me when remote documents are printed". Just uncheck this box, and there you go.

Irritant: Email Client Refuses to Open URLs

Today, we can use more than just one web browser to surf the Internet. The thing is that Windows do not like changes like these and it acts accordingly. If you wanted to use for some time Mozilla Firefox, and then just returned to Internet Explorer, you will see what mess you have gotten yourself into. Just after you made the switch and you uninstalled Firefox, you get an e-mail through Thunderbird or Outlook. And, surprise! Any URL from the e-mail no longer works and you get annoyed and frustrated. Here is how you should do to save yourself a headache. From Control Panel, choose Internet Options; there, in Programs, make Internet Explorer the default browser for surfing the net. That's all!

Many of these servers are really not that different from a desktop PC. They may have more memory, multiple processors and larger hard drives, but they're still more or less the same type of equipment when you get right down to it.

Because of that fact, they're often vulnerable to the same viruses and other internet security threats that the average desktop system is. They also need to run antivirus software, firewalls and other forms of protection.

What Options Do They Have?

Because these servers provide internet services to many users (sometimes thousands at a time) they are a popular target for the people who create viruses. As an end user, you can help to keep these systems virus-free by ensuring that your computer stays that way. And the system administrators on those systems can help by limiting the type of software that gets installed on them.

When you keep your computer protect against online security threats, you're helping to minimize the target area for hackers. It's also necessary to keep your computer updated with the latest operating system and browser patches. You may even want to consider running a more secure web browser, such as Firefox, instead of Internet Explorer.
