Microsoft Excel measures row height in points, the same units used to measure font size. When creating reports this makes it easy to relate the height of rows to the required line spacing. This means that you can increase the line spacing simply by increasing the height of your rows.

The methods used for changing column widths (something that Excel users do far more frequently) can also be used to change row height. Firstly. we can make a selection and. in the Cells section of the Home Tab of the Excel Ribbon, choose Format then Row Height. If you double Excel's default row height, you will obtain an approximation of double line spacing. If you multiple the default by a factor of 1.5, you will obtain approximately 1 1/2 line spacing, and so forth.

Excel's AutoFit facility can also be used to automatically resize row heights to accommodate the largest font size contained in a given selection. To use the AutoFit command on a single row, position the cursor at the bottom of the row heading and simply double-click. To AutoFit a range of rows, first make a selection and then double-click at the bottom of any of the selected row headings. The same result can also be achieved by using Format - AutoFit Row Height in the Cells section of the Home Tab of the Excel Ribbon.

In a lot of circumstances, row height can be completely ignored since Excel will automatically adjust the height of rows to accommodate the largest font size found on each row. For example, suppose we insert a header row at the top of a worksheet centred across all the columns containing data. If we then increase the font size of this heading, Excel will automatically increase the row height to accommodate the new font size, pushing the rest of the data down.

Another technique is to increase the row height interactively. This is done by positioning the cursor on the line below the row heading and dragging up or down. As you drag, Excel displays a tooltip containing the row height in points and in pixels.

When you increase the height of a row, the vertical alignment of your data becomes more apparent. By default, Excel aligns text at the bottom of the cell. When you have increased the row height, as you will often do with headings, changing the vertical alignment to centred is usually more visually appealing.

Microsoft Excel offers us a number of different ways of changing the width of columns and the height of rows. The width of columns is expressed as the number of characters the cell can hold. By default, Excel gives each column a width of just over eight characters. This means, for example, that if you're using a spreadsheet primarily for numerical data, you can enter eight digits in each column using the default width.

If you plan to modify the default width, it makes sense to do so before you start entering data into your worksheet. For example, if you know that you'll be entering fairly short pieces of data in each column, you might want to reduce the default width. To customise the default width, go to the Cells section of the Home Tab of the Excel Ribbon. Click the Format button and choose Default Width from the drop-down. In the window which appears, you will see Excel's standard column width of approximately 8 characters. Simply input a new entry and click OK.

As long as you haven't changed the width of a column using any other technique, you can change the default width at any time and any cells that have been left at the default width will automatically change to reflect the new setting.

The second method of changing column widths is to use Excel's AutoFit feature. This technique automatically adjusts the width of a column to ensure that the contents of the selected cells are completely visible. To AutoFit a range columns, highlight the cells that you want Excel to take into account or simply highlight the entire column. Next, position the cursor on the right hand edge of the column and, when the cursor changes to a double arrow, double-click.

You can also AutoFit data in a range of columns by selecting a range of data across several columns or highlight several entire columns and then choosing Format then AutoFit Column Width in the Cells group of the Home Tab of the Excel Ribbon.

When using the AutoFit feature, it's inevitable that you'll end up with columns that have different widths. If you would like a range of columns to have exactly the same width then simply select the range and choose Format then Column Widths and enter a global width.

Excel also allows you to adjust the width of columns interactively. To do this, position the cursor on the right hand edge of the column and, when the cursor changes to a double arrow, click, hold and drag. As you drag, you will see the width of the column displayed both in characters and in pixels. This same technique can be used either to adjust the width of a single column or a range of columns.

Because background colour applies to the cell it cannot be applied at the text level. Since modern computer-generated typefaces are proportionally spaced, the extra space is superfluous and should not be used.

* The habit of pressing the Return key twice at the end of each paragraph is not a good idea because it creates a sea of extra white space on the printed page. Only one return should used to end the paragraph. Extra space can then be added using the paragraph spacing commands. To find these options, in Word 2003 or earlier, choose Paragraph from the format menu. In Word 2007, click on the Page Layout tab.

* If a casual user of Word has never had any training, you will often see him or her using the space bar to align columns of text. This sometimes looks as though it's working on screen but when the document is printed, the lack of alignment becomes very apparent. The only sure way of getting columns to align is to press the Tab key.

* Word, like most text handling software has default tab stops. So, a lot of users align their columns by pressing the tab key repeatedly if necessary to move to closest default tab. This leads to inconsistency in the number of tab characters between columns and should be avoided. It's much better to click on the Word ruler to set up your own tabs just where you need them.

* Another common mistake among Word users is to manually format text in long documents or perhaps to user the Format Painter. Manually formatting text is fine for single page or short documents but with long documents, it's best to use Word's style feature. That way, if you need to modify the appearance of the document, all you need to do is to modify the attributes of the styles.

* Then there's the question of who's in charge: Word or the user. You will often hear users complain that Word has a mind of its own: "It tries to do everything for you". Remember, almost any setting in Word that irritates you can be modified by going to Tools - Options in Word 2003 or earlier or choosing Word Options from the Office Button in Word 2007.

CNC stands for computer numerical control and is basically the use of a computer to do certain types of operations. This is a process that can be applied to lathe, router, foam cutters and laser machines; it can also be applied to mini versions of these types of machines.

There are basically two types of categories that G Code Programming will fall into point to point positioning or continuous path positioning. Usually a computer can execute both types of CNC Programming depending on the sophistication of the software program being used. This means that the operator must understand both processes in order to run the machine.

Here is a simple explanation of these two categories:

Point to point positioning -- this category is mostly used when drilling, boring, punching or tapping is needed. This is a process used to position from one point to another when the machine process is being done. In other words, it works from the X to the Y position or to as many positions as it is instructed and keeps going until the process is finished.

Continuous path positioning -- this category is generally used when a lathe or milling machine is being used and is used for contouring (contouring is another name for this category). This means that the cutting tool moves in a continuous motion from one point to another until the piece is completed. This means that the operator has to be able to program the machine so that it continues on several axes at a time and simultaneously.

Continuous path positioning also uses a series of processes called interpolation which is the way in which the machine is programmed to go. Interpolation can be helical, parabolic, cubic, circular and more. The basic function of this interpolation is to keep the programmed information stored and to monitor and direct the axes in how it should go.

Before any of the programming can be done there is a manuscript that is used which is the basic drawing of what is to be made. This must be studied to make sure that the operator understands the intricacies of the drawing so they can translate the information into the computer software they are using.

This means that the operator must be skilled enough to understand how the paper drawing will translate to the computer, and then be able to program this information into the computer so that the machine will perform the cuts or the processes accordingly.

When you think about this process, it is a good idea to think about what you would do if you were producing the work manually because anything you would do manually, you will depend on the machine to do automatically. By understanding both processes the individual will be more successful.

(EDC)program for java , that large scale .NET investment maturation is outpacing Java investment maturation. The CA- sponsored survey, which targeted corporations with 1,000-plus employees and queried 350 developers and directors involved in making and/or managing business-critical .NET applications, also learned that a deep market exists for united practical application operation management (APM) solutions that help the increased use of both development architectures in the same organization.

"These survey resolutions confirm that .NET applications are diffusing in fundamental corporations and their acceptance and dependability is continuing to increase," said Mike Allen, director of product management for CA Wily Technology, a division of CA. "This begs the question of how to effectively manage environments that use both .NET and Java. CA Wily advocates a comprehensive practical application operation management solution that addresses both with a single solution and helps key Web applications to meet business, customer experience and operation goals."

The survey learned that most corporations have highly heterogeneous practical application environments and that .NET help teams are similar to Java help teams in terms of size, structure, problem types and times to isolate problems. A vast majority of respondents said their .NET and Java groups are united within their help organizations, highlighting the industry requirement for a comprehensive approach to practical application operation management. As with Java, management responsibility is spread across departments (development, operations, quality assurance, etc.), and equally required in both environments.

Highlights of the survey include:

- Nearly 60 % responded that their .NET investment is growing, while 50 % said they are adding new .NET personnel; - 57 % of respondents indicated that .NET expenditures comprise more than a quarter of their overall business-critical practical application investment; nearly 20 % of respondents put that figure between 75 and 100 %.

"An increasing number of corporations are realizing the benefits of deploying applications built on both .NET and Java. However, with those benefits come the challenges of managing a heterogeneous environment coupled with the unique issues of both development architectures," said Jasmine Noel, founder and partner, Ptak, Noel & Associates. "To help maximize ROI, IT organizations should use a single tool to manage the operation and availability of .NET and Java applications in the same environment."

Additional findings on the state of commercial .NET applications include the following data points on problem causes and slowdowns:programming with java

- 54 % of respondents said that development is the department responsible for .NET help, compared to 69 % for Java;
