The CompTIA Network+ certification is the sign of a competent networking professional. It is an international, vendor-neutral certification that proves a technician's competency in managing, maintaining, troubleshooting, installing and configuring basic network infrastructure.

Since its introduction in 1999, more than 235,000 people have become CompTIA Network+ certified. When we pack up our digital camera to take on an outing, or just take a few shots of the kid’s birthday party or our backyard BBQ gathering, we’re just looking to capture some memories, not win a photo contest.

There are tons of fabulous photo editors out there, so how do you know which package to choose, that will meet your needs? You may not want to shell out a couple of hundred bucks – or more – when you have no idea what to do with it, or if the whole package might be way out of your skill set.

Well, here’s some great news! Before you go out and spend your hard-earned cash on photo software that may or may not suit your needs, try some of the many excellent free photo software downloads. So how do you find these gems? Easy. Just Google ‘photo software free download’ and wade through some of the thousands of sites at your disposal.

You’ll first want to get a basic photo editor, also known as an image editor. This is your basic workhorse, which allows you to manipulate your images in dozens of ways. Most include an array of special effects, such as altering colors, contrast, or sharpening or softening the image. Rotating, resizing and introducing layers and transparencies are other common features.

While you’re looking, keep in mind what features will be truly useful to you. For example, if your thing is landscape photos, you may want to look for a photo software package that provides lighting effects. With this feature, you can make a sunset a little more luminous, or even change the color entirely.

An image editor is a computer program that enables you to adjust a photo to improve its appearance. With image editing software, you can darken or lighten a photo, rotate it, adjust its contrast, crop out extraneous detail, remove red-eye and more. Most graphics programs have the ability to import and export one or more graphics file formats. Several graphics programs support animation, or digital video. Vector graphics animation can be described as a series of mathematical transformations that are applied in sequence to one or more shapes in a scene. Raster graphics animation works in a similar fashion to film-based animation, where a series of still images produces the illusion of continuous movement.

Possibly one of the most confusing aspects of dealing with digital imagery is resolution-specifically, what it really is and how changing it affects an image. Simply put, image resolution is the number of pixels displayed per unit of printed length in an image. It's a measurement used for printing and it's usually stated in pixels per inch (ppi-used when referencing screen images) or dots per inch (dpi-used in printing because printers print dots). The way resolution affects an image is thus: For a given number of pixels in the width or height of an image, the higher the resolution, the closer the printer packs those pixels together in order to make a beautifully smooth and sharp print. The closer the pixels are packed together, the smaller the image will be physically when printed, and vice versa. Because our monitors can only display a certain amount of information that our eyeballs/brains can process, resolution matters only to printing devices. That's right, it doesn't mean a hill of beans until that image is headed for a printer because only a printer can do anything with the resolution measurement.

The best thing about digital cameras is that it's easy to take thousands of pictures. That's also the worst thing about digital cameras. After you've owned your camera for a few months, you won't be able to find that great picture you took a couple of months ago if your pictures aren't well organized or named logically. Folders are the best way to organize groups of pictures, and the My Pictures folder is a great place to start. In your My Pictures folder, create a subfolder for each year: 2004, 2005, 2006, and so on. This might seem silly the first year you own your camera, but after five years, you'll be glad you did this because you can go back to your 2005 folder and easily find a picture from a vacation you took that year. Arranging pictures by year is also helpful if you're scanning older photos stored in shoe boxes or albums that you took before owning a digital camera. This is also a good way to start organizing the pictures that you currently have on your computer.

With a photo-editing program, you can "fix" or change images acquired from a scanner, digital camera, or the Internet and print them, import them into another document, post them on a Web page and use them for desktop backgrounds. To make the choice that's right for you, check reviews in computer magazines and on the Internet to narrow your choices; look for a program that can directly import images from a scanner or digital camera; make sure the program can crop, resize, flip and rotate images; compare color adjustment capabilities of programs. You should be able to adjust contrast, brightness, sharpness, hues and color-saturation levels; change a color; and convert color to black-and-white or grayscale; and compare the ease of using the various programs available.

Sharpening is one of the most impressive transformations you can apply to an image since it seems to bring out image detail that was not there before. What it actually does, however, is to emphasize edges in the image and make them easier for the eye to pick out -- while the visual effect is to make the image seem sharper, no new details are actually created. The first step in sharpening an image is to blur it slightly. Next, the original image and the blurred version are compared one pixel at a time. If a pixel is brighter than the blurred version it is lightened further; if a pixel is darker than the blurred version, it is darkened. The result is to increase the contrast between each pixel and its neighbors. The nature of the sharpening is influenced by the blurring radius used and the extent to which the differences between each pixel and its neighbor are exaggerated.

At times the subject of a picture is lost in the surrounding parts of a picture. If this happens, you can always crop your picture. This means cutting down the picture to a certain size. There are many ways to do this in terms of the size of cropping. In just about every photo editing program there is a cropping tool, and you can experiment with the size of the area that you take out of your photograph. If you don't like what you've done, all you have to do is click "undo."

Cropping is the process of selecting and removing a portion of an image to create focus or strengthen its composition. Even the best photographers will often get back to their computers to view their photos and find that they are not ideal for one reason or another including distracting background elements, framing mistakes, or unbalanced images. While the temptation might be to delete such images the beauty of shooting in the digital format is that editing images after shooting them is relatively quick and easy. Cropping is one option for fixing such problems. This is usually done in photo editing software. Cropping images give you a second chance to frame your images. While you can never really add to the photograph to put more space around your subject (or recover the ear you clipped), cropping the image even tighter can take the focus away from the clipped part of your subject and make the image quite dynamic.

It is very, very important to take a good image from the digital camera for proper editing. Editing can be done for enhancement and a little touch up here and there, but when you don't use the basic keys properly you may not land up with a digital image, you may land up with a digital graphic! Even after you turn auto adjust you can further adjust the light settings if you are not satisfied with the output of the software! You can make your color pictures to black and white, and black and white pictures to color by adjusting the exposure mode. If you have a color photograph you can use the adjust color option in fix pane to change it to a black and white. Color picture can be changed to black and white, but the other way round may not be natural unless you are an expert editor and technically very sound!

Animation is one side of editing; you can draw long hair, a pony tail or whatever to a lady figure. Many beauty saloons use this method to proceed further before then can start with your hair dressing. Many plastic surgeons show you how your face may look after the procedure. There are only two things you have too know about the ExtendScript Toolkit program right now: Select target application, ExtendScript must know which application you are writing the script for. In the top left dropdown menu select Adobe Photoshop CS2 and if asked if you want top start it choose yes. Running script, to run a script you have written you press the button that looks like a play button. Reference documents All objects have different properties that can be set and methods that can be executed and right now you probably don't know any of these, this is where the reference documents come in. The reference document for JavaScript contains information about all objects available in your scripts. Start with a blank photoshop document of size 1024*768 and white background. Choose the brush "rough round bristle" from the toolbar. Create a new layer and draw some lines. Right click on the new layer and choose "blending options". Choose the values. DROP SHADOW INNER GLOW BEVEL AND EMBOSS; For "texture", choose "satin" as the pattern. TEXTURE Now add some motion blur to this layer from filters > blur > motion blur. Similarly, add gaussian blur also to this layer with the radius around 72. Not so catchy yet. Well try this. Change the background color of the default layer as black by choosing Edit > Fill from menu. Now look at the output. Ahh, that looks much better, isn't it ? You can add some text to this texturized background if you wish.

Color Model: When you hear the term color model we are referring to the method from which we define or classify the color we are to work with. Examples of such are RGB, LAB, CMYK, etc. Color Space: A color space is simply a variation of your color model. For instance, within your RGB framework some common variations are, sRGB, Adobe RGB, and so on. Some of these spaces are better for display e.g. sRGB and Wide Gamut RGB while other color spaces are more suited to printing e.g. ColorMatch RGB and Adobe RGB. Now, it is important to note that every device in our workflow utilizes it's own unique color space. Meaning, while your monitor, scanner, and printer will base their color spaces basically on what we can see their actual gamut (range of colors) will differ. This is where we lose our consistency across devices. This is the problem we must attend to.

Adobe's Photoshop is the number one choice digital photo editing software application among today's professional photographers, graphic artists and web designers. It is not only the best but easier to work with than you might think. Many shy away from Photoshop because there are intimidated by the complexity. With the help of a good Photoshop tutorial you can begin to learn Photoshop within minutes and be on your way to restoring those old photographs and preserving your family's memories for year to come. There are less expensive digital editing applications but the problem is that they often have very limited capabilities when it comes to doing high quality digital photo restoration. Those cheaper digital photo software packages often utilize a one size fits all approach to photo restoration and they just don't have the functions to deal with all of the types of damage you may encounter in renewing your old photos.

To use the dodge tool, select it in the toolbox, choose your settings in the options bar, pick a brush from the pop-up palette, and drag in the image to lighten the chosen tones. This tool has an effect on click, but does not do any additional work until it's moved (unless you click the airbrush button). However, repeated stroking over the same area does have a cumulative effect. If you choose Edit > Fade immediately after using this tool, you can change the opacity of the strokes you have just applied.

The spot healing brush made its debut in Photoshop Elements 3, but now an enhanced version of it is available in Photoshop CS2. The spot healing tool is different from the existing patch and healing tools in that it does not require you to make a selection or define a source point before using it. As you can see in the screen shot above, Photoshop CS2's spot healing tool has more options than the version in Photoshop Elements 3. You can select a blending mode for the healing, and choose between proximity match or create texture. You can also sample all layers which allows you to use the spot healing tool on a new layer for non-destructive editing.

The easiest way to make teeth whiter in a photo is with your Dodge Tool. (Among your tool icons, it's the 7th down on the right hand column. If you don't see it there, right click on the icon and you'll find two hidden choices; one will be your Dodge Tool.) On the horizontal Tool Options Bar under the Menu, choose "Midtones" for Range, and 40% for Exposure. Also on the Tool Options Bar, choose the appropriate brush for this particular retouching job. Use your Magnifying Glass Icon in Tools to zoom in to the area you want to affect. Then run your brush over the teeth you want to whiten several times, slowly, without releasing your mouse. If you find that the Dodge tool whitened too much, you can either click "Edit," then "Step Backward," (to start over), or "Edit", then "Fade Dodge Tool," which will allow you to fade the whitening enhancement to your exact preference.

Inside every program are things that people don't often do, tools that aren't used as much as they should be. The same applies to photoshop. In this case these aren't being used enough. Turning a Photo Into a Work of Art. Everyone likes to have nice things to look at. Most of us like to have pictures on the wall, and something that looks different from what other people have on their walls is a definite plus. Unless you're blessed with artistic talent, though, this can be very expensive - until now. Use one of Photoshop's many Artistic or Brush Stroke filters to turn your photos into "new masters," then print them out on quality art paper. Designing Web Banners and Buttons. Photoshop comes with a predefined web banner sized canvas. Photoshop's sister application, Image Ready, comes with several - and lots of tools for animating text and pictures. You can also create interactive buttons that enhance a web browsing experience.

Photography, as an art form is constituted of numerous intricacies. From selecting optimal light conditions, to varying the amount of exposure to even selecting the appropriate lens and filters and yet we find that despite our best efforts, we are usually never completely satisfied with the final outcome. The feeling of "What if" lingers and given the constraints of time and expenses incurred, it re-shooting the entire image, or series of images, as the case may be, is not always a feasible solution. And here's where editing comes into the picture. Not just limited to digital photography, many conventional photographers edit the imperfections away from their photographs in their dark rooms. And with the advent of time and technology, many new and advanced kinds of software have been developed, amongst which a worthy forerunner is Adobe Photoshop.

Many a times, editing software does produce the desired effect, but significantly lowers the image quality. As a result, many photographers choose not to experiment with editing software but try the more conventional "darkroom techniques." With Photoshop, this hurdle is vanquished as you can work on your image without altering the original content itself. And this can be accomplished by using "Layers" which are similar in nature to transparencies, each of which consists of a part of the image. When stacked over each other, these layers collectively form the complete image. Hence, by using layers, you can work on only a particular part of the image to which you can apply your choice of effects while leaving the rest of the photograph unchanged.

Thus, you can work on the overexposed part of your image, building density and correcting the color until you are completely satisfied with the results. What's more, if you aren't too happy with the final outcome, you can even undo the specific effect on the explicit part of the image, as you are not modifying the image itself, but rather only the part which is superimposed on the screen or 'Layer'. Here, the multiple undo option proves invaluable, as it allows you to experiment with as many effects as you wish and retain only the ones that enhance your final product.

If your editing skills go haywire, and you end up with something you didn't quite expect, you can also undo all the changes you've made and start all over, without even the slightest bit of change to the original image quality. You can also gauge if your editing is proceeding the right way by turning off the visibility of the layer you are working on, to view the overall effect and then turning the visibility back on to proceed with your editing.

Photoshop lets you choose between two alternatives when it comes to creating your personalized layers. You can either start at the Layer Menu and choose an adjustment layer from the New Adjustment layer Sub-Menu or click on the Layer Palette icon which enables you to choose a layer adjustment type from the pop up menu. To save on time and effort in future, you can even save the layer adjustments to apply them on further images in future without having to worry about if you'll achieve the same results.

Labeling your layers with distinct names is also helpful as you can distinguish between layers and switch to and fro without any confusion. To name the layer you are working on, double click on the Layer, and enter the moniker you've chosen in the name field and then click on OK to save your preference. To make your task easier, you can also hide all the other layers except for the one you are working on, while will also help you focus better by clicking on the eye icon next to the layers you're not using. To bring them back on, click on the eye icon again and proceed to the next layer. This makes your task a lot easier and more organized, thus saving you a lot of time and patience.

If you divide your image into too many layers, you may find it exceedingly difficult to manage all the layers without messing them up. So, you can either delete the unwanted layers, or merge a combination of layers together using the Merge Layers Option in the Layer Menu. The key to your success with Photoshop undoubtedly lies in perfecting your skills with layers. A little bit of practice and loads of creativity imperfect images will soon be ancient history!

Color Model: When you hear the term color model we are referring to the method from which we define or classify the color we are to work with. Examples of such are RGB, LAB, CMYK, etc. Color Space: A color space is simply a variation of your color model. For instance, within your RGB framework some common variations are, sRGB, Adobe RGB, and so on. Some of these spaces are better for display e.g. sRGB and Wide Gamut RGB while other color spaces are more suited to printing e.g. ColorMatch RGB and Adobe RGB. Now, it is important to note that every device in our workflow utilizes it's own unique color space. Meaning, while your monitor, scanner, and printer will base their color spaces basically on what we can see their actual gamut (range of colors) will differ. This is where we lose our consistency across devices. This is the problem we must attend to.

This is where professional level CMS's and entry level ones differ. At this point with the entry level you will scan in the printed target and the CMS will actually use the before generated scanner profile to correct the scan, so it can the correct your printed target. A professional level CMS will have a separate hardware device designed specifically for reading printed media targets.

Profiles are only as accurate as the CMS that generates them and the size of the targets that are used to generate them. Packages in the $150-$500 price range generally have around 75-250 patches, while $2000 and up gets you 729 patches or more. Also, the more expensive packages rely on physical hardware devices to generate printer profiles, while the less expensive packages use your scanner as the print colorimeter. In addition, the more expensive packages have numerous options for the edition of the profiles you create.

Computers are used more than ever in offices around the world, but that doesn't mean that printing documents has become unnecessary. Printers and printing supplies are now in high demand, since frequent printing means frequent printer servicing. This applies to both home and business use.

Today's printers offer a lot of features - high resolution photo printing, multi-function printer/scanning/faxing, digital memory card readers and much more. But before you make a decision, there are some basic considerations that you need to think about.

First is the long-term cost of the printer. You can buy a very good color printer for well under $100 these days but the catch is most of these inexpensive models have costly ink cartridges.

Find out the price of ink replacement on any low priced printers before making a purchase. Consider options like generic cartridges and refilling cartridges.

Second, find out whether or not the printer you're considering includes full size ink cartridges. Many of today's printers come with "starter" inks that have much less ink in them than a standard cartridge.

The printer may not seem like such a good deal when you have to buy a new set of ink after printing 40 or 50 pages.

Next, consider the cost of the black cartridge. Most people print much more black and white than they do color. Some printers have considerably larger black cartridges than others, and if you do a lot of black printing the larger cartridges can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Fourth, consider what kind of things you'll be printing. If you want to be able to print your own digital photos you should look at one of the many photo printers on the market.

If you're not printing photos, however, photo printers generally cost more to operate than other options. You might be better off with a laser printer that has considerably lower operating costs than inkjet.

Something else to be considered is if extra features such as scanning, copying, and faxing are for you. While such features are nice, they often go unused by owners, and might not be necessary.

Finally, don't forget to review the costs of the above mentioned features. A local copy shop that makes copies for five or ten cents might be more cost efficient than a home printer that can copy pages for an average cost of fifty cents to a dollar.

5 Tips For Buying A New Printer

I'm a web developer and my wife is a graphic designer. We started selling photos online over two years ago as a way to earn a little extra money out of something we enjoyed. We only had a little 4 megapixel point-n-shoot camera but my wife knew a little about editing photos from studying Design. We thought we knew about photography then, but now we know what we didn't know then.

In our first month we only earned $16, yet with some persistence and a lot of internet research we raised this amount to $270 in six months. Since it was only a part time hobby we certainly weren't expecting it to earn so much so quickly, yet this early success convinced us of the potential that was there and we quickly invested in a digital SLR. That was 2 years ago and we're now earning around $600 per month and have a modest portfolio of approximately 700 photographs listed with eight agencies. We still consider ourselves hobbyist photographers who create stock photos in our spare time.

Who sells photos in the microstock market?Through my blog I've connected with hundreds of other microstock contributors. There is an amazing variety of people contributing to this market and with a similarly impressive variety of reasons. I know retired couples who just love to see their work published and I know people who earn tens of thousands of dollars each month. There's also a variety of people in the middle for whom microstock is their job or who, like me, have microstock as part of their income. However, one of the biggest groups are photography students - both formal students with photography as their chosen career and hobbyists who study for fun.

Why is microstock so good for students? There are three main reasons: freedom; money; and education.

To participate with Microstock is free and there are no set working hours, no bosses to order you around and no due dates. Microstock actually pays you money for your photographs, which is really great since photography is not a cheap hobby. Most importantly, if you're interested in learning about the commercial side of photography Microstock is a great learning tool. Who could be a better instructor than a global market of photo buyers?

Isn't microstock 'bad' for the industry? If you do any research about microstock you will quickly find that it's controversial. The concept only works with the Internet and high quality digital cameras, so it's still relatively new. Subsequently there are still many professional stock photographers with strong feelings about the impact microstock is having on the industry.

I've personally spoken with a few of the world's most successful stock photographers and they're not noticing any impacts on their business from microstock. They know that their photos compete on quality and not price (microstock photos sell cheaper but in higher quantity) and their will always be buyers interested in the top level of the market, regardless of the price.

It's also understandable that many of the photographers who now make a living with microstock have displaced some 'traditional' stock photographers. This happens with any technological change as big as the Internet and digital photography and it's understandable that those on the receiving end are not happy about it.

To be sure, Microstock has brought new buyers to the market. Prior to Microstock small businesses, charities and bloggers weren't big purchasers of stock photos when each image cost $350 or more. Now that blog size images are $1 and print size images are $10, you can imagine how sales have increased.

Now you might be wondering, how much can I earn in microstock? That question depends on both the quality and quantity of photos you can produce. Many people who work full time and have a portfolio of 7,000 high quality images earn over $20,000 per MONTH! On the flip side some contributors with only a handful of images earn just a few dollars a month. Like me, you will most likely find yourself between these two extremes.

I earn just a bit under $1 per photo per month. You can find monthly earnings, figures and links to various portfolios with a quick Google search. With this information you can quickly compare your portfolio or photography skills to figure out, more or less, how much you could expect to earn with your photos in the microstock market.

Is microstock easy? Not at the beginning, it isn't. Many online agencies require a test submission which is generally stricter than their typical review process. Microstock agencies also review submissions based on what sells, which is images that are super sharp, noiseless and commercially appealing. Because of this initial review many of the established and highly skilled photographers experience early rejections and quickly dismiss the microstock opportunity. You can start with some of the middle tier agencies which don't require you to pass a test. In doing this you can easily get an idea of what types of photos are being accepted and which ones sell well. After that, it's relatively easy to start earning money.

Doing some research you can find examples the best selling photos. Typically most are simple shots taken with the intention of selling for stock, but with no more preparation that being in the correct spot with your camera. Many photos can earn over $30 per month though the potential success will vary between agencies.

It's also not easy creating above-average success. Average per-photo earnings of top microstock contributors can be up to ten times what I earn, so you can imagine the difference in the quality and appeal of the photos they produce. They also need to repeat this many times to create a portfolio large enough to raise their earnings above average.

How can I improve my chances of success? Here are my top suggestions for people who want to get started selling their photos in the microstock market:

Managing your expectations can often sound easier than it actually is. A typical sales pitch might read, "click here to start earning money from the photos sitting idle on your computer". That's not exactly realistic and you'll soon quit if you begin with this expectation in mind. Do your own research to figure out what sells, create these photos well, and be smart about how you contribute. Concentrate on workflow.

If you plan to contribute lots of photos it makes sense to have an efficient workflow so you don't waste time doing unnecessary repetitive tasks. Do your research and refine your workflow so you can get a quality product into the market as efficiently as possible. Microstock is business. If you're an artist more than a commercial photographer you may want to seriously consider if you and microstock are a good match. Artistic photos will sell in the microstock market, but not nearly as well as commercial photos.

Research. I've already given you a few things to research but don't stop with those. Get all your questions answered before you get started so you save time and don't accidentally do anything that doesn't work to your advantage. 1. Watch films. Hard work I know. Films have an infinite amounts of ideas for inspiration with different concepts for lighting and composition. With 30 images per second, you'll have some great ideas in no time.

2. Enter photography contests online. Contests often give you topics or themes which can give you inspiration when you don't know what to shoot.

3. Watch Movies. It is another source of inspiration, as they are nothing more than still images shown to you at 29.97 frames a second. Lots of ideas for concepts, lighting, messages, or just plain pretty images.

9. Carry your camera with you everywhere you go. Often a great photo opportunity will present itself for only a moment. Take advantage of what life throws your way by being prepared.

10. Take a photo a day and see your life in a whole new way. Remember that a camera that you don't have with you is a camera that's not going to take any pictures. So try to have your camera on you as often as possible.

Top 10 Ideas for Great Photos

Blu Ray on a PS3 not crystal clear enough..?

I played the Blu Ray disc Iron Man on my PS 3 hooked up to a 1080p TV (PS 3 and TV settings all tuned to 1080p), I still don't get super crystal clear flawless pictures as compared to what I saw on a TV playing Blu Ray movies at an electronics store. When I get close up to my TV, I don't see the crystal clear images I would expect. Is it my HDMI cable perhaps its not high quality enough? I mean if I can't tell the difference between Blu Ray discs and upconverted DVDs playing on an 1080p TV. I fail to see the "Wow" factor in Blu Ray. Any thoughts?

I have a PS3 and use it as a blu-ray player all the time. I get monumentally better picture from it playing Blu-ray disks than I do playing DVD's which it upconverts, and I have a 1080i TV (Panasonic Viera). There could be a few reasons why it may not look as good as expected...

-your TV is much bigger than the ones you've seen at the store (my parents run a 126" 1080p projector and the picture just isn't as clean as it is on their 57" 1080p LCD TV) and the lines of resolution don't appear as sharp.

-the Blu-ray was created with a poor quality transfer. I own several Blu-ray disks and some are significantly better looking than others. Ocean's 11-13 are average at best (my favorites) while Hairspray (my wife's favorite) has much better sharpness and more vivid color.

-the Blu-ray wasn't orifinally shot with HD content. I've never seen older footage that was digitally enhanced for HD look anywhere close to true HD-shot video.

-your TV settings are skewing the image. This is a likely one. When I put my first Blu-ray into my PS3 (Spiderman 3) I actually had to go into my TV settings and turn my sharpness, contrast, and picture DOWN to get the cleaner, sharper image from the disk. My TV was used to sharpening dull analogue signals and low-res digital shots and once it got the full 1080 lines of res it just needed to go back to normal to look it's best. Try this one for sure!

Your PS3 has a great video chip. It should look pristine if you are running HDMI and I run a crappy 12 ft Rocketfish HDMI cable and it looks as stunning as my brother's 6 ft monster cable to the human eye.

Disc herniations and disc bulges are very common causes of neck and back pain. When they are acute, some of the symptoms may be numbness and tingling down the arms and into the hands (when the disc issues are in the neck) and down the buttocks, legs and feet (when the disc issues are in the low back). Injuries to the discs in the low back or neck can be caused by anything from a sports injury or car accident to a simple movement or even by sneezing (as was the case with a few patients that I've had).

The symptoms of a disc herniation may come and go and at it's worst, they can be even excruciating and certainly infringe upon a person's ability to function daily at work or even disturb one's sleep. There aren't too many options for treatment of a disc herniation. Usually if the injury is confirmed by a MRI of the neck or low back, the first options are simple medication and/or physical therapy. If that fails, the next level of treatment would be corticosteroid injections at the level of injury, which may offer some slight but, temporary relief. Finally, if all else fails surgery is often recommended. However, as most spine surgeons will tell you, it's often hard to predict whether or not you'll respond to spine surgery and it should be considered only as a last resort. It may be that you do respond well to surgery however, there is the possibility that you will remain the same symptomatically, or your condition gets even worse. The research also shows, if you get more than one spinal surgery, your likelihood of ever making a full recovery diminishes.

As a practicing Chiropractic Physician, I've seen my fair share of disc bulges and herniations in my office. Typically, I see patients once they've had all the aforementioned conservative treatment (medication, injections and physical therapy) and they are still no better; when they've just injured their disc(s) or when they're referred in for a second opinion. I emphasize utilizing a conservative approach of gentle chiropractic care, massage therapy and acupuncture first followed by, some physical therapy. If however, they're not responding to that or they've already tried those therapies, I recommend Spinal Decompression. Spinal Decompression is a relatively new therapy that is completely conservative, drug-free and non-surgical. The purpose of the therapy is to provide a negative pressure between your vertebra at the level of your injured disc(s) to pull the herniated back into it's normal place, allowing it to heal and relieving pressure off of the nerves in the area. The therapy usually lasts approximately, 30 minutes or so and a typical treatment protocol includes exercises and other modalities over the course of several treatments.

While spinal decompression is not for everyone, it is an excellent option for people who are seeking a conservative modality that treats their condition/discs without putting anything into their spines like an injection or pull anything out like a surgery. If you're suffering from a disc herniation and would like another opinion or treatment option, certainly seek out an office that provides spinal decompression in your area and speak with them about getting a consultation to see if you're a candidate for care. The results can be remarkable in many instances!

So why is this such an important element of an image? Hello! It is the reason you are taking the shot. Often amateur photographers want to get as much of a scene in the photo as possible. They want to remember everything at once despite the fact that the resulting image is cluttered, confusing and downright average. Many of our photograph albums are cluttered with images that aren't memorable and the subjects are indistinguishable from all the other elements. What then is the solution to this problem? What can be do to solve the dilemma? The news is good and the solution very simple. Here goes, some tips to make your subject the star of the photo.

1. Be selective

Take a careful look at the scene and decide immediately what is most important to you. Try this little exercise. Picture yourself in 20 years time flipping through an album of precious memories. Perhaps the person you are remembering has passed away. What would you like to change about the image to make it more memorable? If you could go back in time, what would you have excluded from the photo? You are getting the opportunity to decide now what will be the memory later. That leads to the next point.

2. Exclude Clutter

Clutter is a part of everyday lives but we don't want to remember it in our photos. All of us have this problem after we have taken a photo. We leave too much in the photo that is not necessary. Getting back to the previous point. In that precious photo what do you consider unimportant and not necessary in the image? These are items you want to exclude and take the opportunity to include more of what you really want into the image. Again this leads us on to the next point.

3. Give your subject most of the attention

In order to do this you must make the subject the centre of attention. Pretend it's a Hollywood star and make it the star attraction. All of sudden the subject becomes more prominent and anyone can tell who or what the subject of the photo is. It should hit you front and centre and say without confusion, "I am the subject". If the subject doesn't shout "I'm the subject" then it's not the subject.

4. Get in closer

By doing this you automatically do point 2. Exclude all the clutter and unnecessary elements of an image. Things that you really don't want to remember in ten or twenty years time. This should be logical. All of us dream of better cameras or lenses that will get us closer to the subject. So, use your feet. Walk in closer and fill the image with your subject or just a part of the subject, unless of course it's a lion in a safari park. Most times you can use your feet to get in closer and this will immediately improve the image and make your subject more prominent.

5. Change your perpective

In simple terms this means move around and find a different location from where you can shoot, or, a more interesting angle. Changing your angle from right in front of your subject to a lower or higher viewpoint will give a completely different perspective. Lie on your stomach or back, climb a ladder or go down some stairs giving you a vantage point for great images.

Key to great subject placement is thinking outside the box. And key to this is plain old thinking. Give more thought and time to your image before clicking the shutter button. The old saying that goes, "time is money" can be equated to "time is quality". The more time and effort you put into your photography will result in better quality images. There are a number of other ways you can improve your image but by putting into practice these simple principles will give you immediate photographic success.

It concerns me as a photographer when I see the numerous articles and ebooks about making cash from your camera. 8 Easy steps or 10 ways to turn those snapshots into cash. And, "Hi shutterbug here's a foolproof way to turn those photos into dollars". Or, earn $200-$400 per day from your camera. With all the resource boxes pointing to, you guessed it, books and cds that will help you make money from your camera or rather the authors make money from your purchase.

All of us who are photographers would love to make a regular income from the hobby or profession we love. None of us want to be told that it is difficult, it takes time and not many people make it. These dubious dealers give the impression that anyone can make money from their photos. Rubbish! If you take a look at the stock sites and see the quality of images for sale, you'll realise that unless you are really talented you will never produce the quality that the buyers are looking for. Do yourself a favour. Do a search on the name of the ebook author who makes all of these claims using Google and then go to the major stock sites and do the same. Where are these authors making their money? From you! If it was so easy why don't they have thousands of images on the stock sites? I rest my case.

Take a look at the guidelines for submission on the stock sites. Every last one of them requires a camera that takes a high resolution image. Some even state that they'll only accept images taken on certain mid-range to high-end digital SLRs. Don't even think that you will be able to compete with your compact camera. You stand no chance. Your images are just not big enough.

I have been on seminars given by successful stock photographers from the microstock sites and all them state that it is tough, demands long hours of work and takes a long time to make a reasonable income. Some never make it despite quality, dedication and a lot of effort. It is not a part-time money making machine as claimed by the ebook authors.

So what does it really take to make money from your camera, if it is at all possible for the amateur? You have to make a decision to dedicate yourself to your photography even if it is part-time. Carefully consider the following points:

1. Dedication to the art of photography

If you are not a dedicated photographer striving for excellence in your art there is no real money to be made. Sorry that's the bottom line. There are so many talented artists producing high quality images that you do not stand a chance if you cannot compete in this field. You need to up your standards and create images that are very high quality.

2. Dedication to detail

Every detail in your image needs to be perfect. This is what the buyer is looking for. He doesn't come along and say, "now which poor point-and-shooter can I help make money today"? When a buyer is planning to put a photo on a billboard every detail must be perfect. Examine your images and ask yourself, "Would I see this image in a magazine?"

3. Dedication to quality

99.9% of snapshots won't make it past the stock site evaluators. Their standards are very high. Sharpness, great colours and perfect composition are just some of the factors you must take into consideration when planning to sell your images. You have to be a photographer, either a pro or dedicated amateur regularly looking at the quality of your images and pushing the limits. Look at the books and magazines and compare your photos. Do they compete? If the answer is yes then you are getting close. The ebooks say that there are millions of people looking for photos for the school and class assignments or projects who will buy your images. Get real! If they have the opportunity to buy an ordinary snapshot or a high quality image shot by a top photographer both selling for a dollar, which would they choose?

4. Dedication to discipline

Discipline is key to any hobby or vocation and especially so with photography. You need to be disciplined in your learning and improving your skills constantly. You need to be disciplined in your shooting and editing your images. And, you need to be disciplined in your submission of quality images to the stock libraries and photo sites. It's a numbers game. The more quality content you have out in the market the more chance you have of buyers selecting your images. You cannot do it on a whim or when you feel motivated to do it. It is essential to have a commitment to the task and a disciplined overall process.

5. Dedicated to achieving results

If at first you don't succeed try and try again. If at first you don't get the results you desire don't give up or try something else. Keep at it until you see results. It's like the little green shoot popping its head above the soil or the tip of the iceberg. You are building the roots that will support the later growth of your business. If you don't have a results driven motivation to see it to the end you will not achieve the success you set out to attain.

It's a hard uphill road to success with photography. The photo world is competitive and saturated with good quality images. If you are to succeed you must break through the barrier from great to outstanding. You must stand head and shoulders above the rest in your quality and excellence.
