A few days ago my PC suffered an attack that threatended to escalate. My PC became compromised just before Christmas. I wondered whether my passwords and credit card details would be stolen. Fortunately I found a fix for the problem.

The main symptom of the attack was the inability to use Windows Updates. Also the main antivirus software that I use (Norton antivirus) appeared to know that the trojan.VUNDO was present. It reported a fix, but almost immediately this was overturned and the problem reverted.

If the PC is cut off from security updates from the operating system provider (Microsoft) it will then become vulnerable to further more serious attacks. A criminal who knows you have been cut off from help from the software vendor support knows you are defenceless and that sooner or later he will be able to get to sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details. Your computer could be a goldmine for the criminal.

It is essential that when security updates become disabled you fix this problem as soon as possible. Do not postpone this even if the computer is operating normally in other ways. If you choose to ignore it the results could be disastrous.

The first thing to try is to download the updates manually, but in my case this was knocked out as well. My pc was totally cut off from help from the software vendor.

Another way had to be found around this problem. I searched Windows forums and discussion groups and soon came across a solution. It was a software package called Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.31 and it can be found at http://www.malwarebytes.org/. It fixed the problem quickly and has the advantage that it is free.

There are paid versions as well. Updates are brought out every few days and so they are clearly responding to new threats rapidly.

Criminals are continually developing malware, including viruses, trojans and worms with the object of stealing money from members of the Internet community. Fortunately there are companies like Malewarebytes out there fighting them. They certainly fixed trojan.VUNDO for me.

The worst form of malware is called Spyware, which can steal your identity. It also does a good job of hiding on your computer so that you can not look and see if any spyware programs installed. To find out if your computer has spyware you will have to look for symptoms that there is spyware on your system so that you can do something quickly before your personal data gets stolen.

The initial hint of the existence of a spyware in your computer is slow performing system. When you try to open different programs at the same time, the memory allocates resources to make the system work efficiently. Spywares are computer programs that runs in the background. You are unaware of them running and they eat up your resources resulting to a slower system.

The next sign is multiple strange program names coming up when you view a list of all running programs. There are spyware programs that are able to hide their presence, but if you see the names of programs that do not look at all familiar, chances are that they are spyware that was unable to mask itself from your computers program detection.

Occasionally these are created by trustworthy programs " for example, AOL used to install a number of different trial programs when you added them to your hard drive - but they can also be caused by spyware that is attempting to get you to download a program in order to steal some of your identity or infect your computer further. The third sign of spyware is when you find icons on you computer for trial services that should not have been installed.

As mentioned previously, even if nothing too severe has occurred to your computers performance, you still need to remove it in order to ensure that worse spyware does not install itself in the future. In addition, if it has been a long time since you have reformatted your hard drive, chances are you have at least some low level spyware that may not be dangerous, but is going to be negatively affecting your computer.

Apart from being difficult to find, spyware is also difficult to get rid of. If you don't manage to get rid of the entire spyware program, most of them can then reinstall themselves, therefore it's essential to use special software to successfully locate and uninstall it.

Spyware can be very loathsome to your consensus and your laptop. Horizontal non-invasive spyware causes your notebook to lazy bummed out, and can conduct to unfamiliar more spyware programs in the point that pass out reputation your sole story and expenses habits. If you network that any of the notation of a spyware infected mainframe are shot to you, you crave to make indeed that you do your appropriate to amputate it before your concealment has been breached.

There are a number of different types of identity theft such as the fraudulent use of someone else's credit card or bank account, running up bills in another person's name and working in another person's name. Victims of identity theft often responsible for repaying the money and/or owed and this is why everyone should follow some guaranteed to work tips for protection against identity theft.

First, you need to be able to recognize the different types of identity theft and how they occur. Checking your credit rating on a regular basis and watching your bills and statements for unusual items are just a start. You should also consider the following:

- Never give out personal information unless it is to someone that is well known and trusted to you

- Always shred any documents that contain personal information before you throw them out

- Social security numbers are strictly confidential. Never have them (or any other personal identification number like a drivers license) printed on checks

- Don't carry important identification when it isn't necessary as they can be stolen

- Consider taking your details out of the phonebook

- Cancel and destroy any cards that are not used

- If your purse or wallet has been stolen, contact any financial institution that you may have an account with

Other things you can do to help prevent identity theft include keeping your important documents locked in a safe at home. Never give out personal information to telemarketers or unsolicited email senders. When you're traveling, make a copy of your identification and leave it with someone you can contact in case the originals are lost or stolen.

Tips for Protection against Online Identity Theft

Protecting yourself on the internet isn't complicated. Make sure you have a current antivirus and spyware scanner on your computer, and keep them updated. Change your passwords on a regular basis and make sure they're hard to guess. Ideally you should use a combination of letters, number and symbols. Never respond to emails asking for private information such as credit card details or account information. Before logging into your bank or credit card website, verify that the website is legitimate.

By now most users are aware of the need to implement antivirus software on individual systems. But a large percentage of the hardware and software used to provide something for those users to use resides outside them. What are they and what can be done to protect them from virus attacks?

Virus attacks aren't limited to desktop PC's. The computer servers that operate websites, email and other internet services are also vulnerable.

Many of these servers are really not that different from a desktop PC. They may have more memory, multiple processors and larger hard drives, but they're still more or less the same type of equipment when you get right down to it.

Because of that fact, they're often vulnerable to the same viruses and other internet security threats that the average desktop system is. They also need to run antivirus software, firewalls and other forms of protection.

What Options Do They Have?

Because these servers provide internet services to many users (sometimes thousands at a time) they are a popular target for the people who create viruses. As an end user, you can help to keep these systems virus-free by ensuring that your computer stays that way. And the system administrators on those systems can help by limiting the type of software that gets installed on them.

When you keep your computer protect against online security threats, you're helping to minimize the target area for hackers. It's also necessary to keep your computer updated with the latest operating system and browser patches. You may even want to consider running a more secure web browser, such as Firefox, instead of Internet Explorer.

Avoid booting from or loading software from CD's, DVD's or other disks that haven't been scanned for viruses, if you're not sure of the source. If a single file on one of those disks contains a virus, it can spread like wildfire.

If you use FTP, you should look into switching to a more secure system for file transfers. FTP passwords are sent "in the clear" - there is no encryption on them at all. So when you log into an FTP server, if someone is monitoring your internet traffic, they can easily get your password.

It's up to all of us to make sure these systems remain secure - not just the system administrators. They have a lot of work on their plate and aren't always as quick to respond to security issues as they would like.

by Paul Wilcox

By now most users are aware of the need to implement antivirus software on individual systems. But a large percentage of the hardware and software used to provide something for those users to use resides outside them. What are they and what can be done to protect them from virus attacks?

Virus attacks aren't limited to desktop PC's. The computer servers that operate websites, email and other internet services are also vulnerable.

Many of these servers are really not that different from a desktop PC. They may have more memory, multiple processors and larger hard drives, but they're still more or less the same type of equipment when you get right down to it.

Most operate much like an individual's system and are subject to the same kinds of attacks. They can therefore be protected by many of the same means - regular use of reliable antivirus software and being firewall guarded to shut down vulnerable entry points on the Internet.

What else can be done?

These servers can be servicing thousands of users at the same time in some cases so they're a popular target for the virus writers. As a user on these systems, you can help keep them virus-free by making sure your own computer is. And their system administrators can help by limiting what kinds of programs get installed on them.

Users can help administrators and themselves by being more careful in browser selection and configuration. Most could profit from better self-education in how to minimize the 'target area' for hackers by changing browser settings. Users and computer professionals have made strides in voicing concern over security vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer. Adopting other browsers in greater numbers will help to get the message across.

Users and administrators should avoid using bootable CD's and DVD's that haven't been virus scanned after being burned with desired software and files. Sometimes the process that creates them propagates viruses, just as floppy disks did some years ago.

Finally, if you use FTP for transferring files, you need to consider switching to a more secure alternative. FTP sends all passwords unencrypted so if someone is able to intercept your internet connection, they can easily get your password.

Users should take an active role in encouraging administrators to lock down systems. Most admins do a very good job with limited time and resources, but security is usually well down their list of priorities. Users who show an interest can alter that in a constructive way by showing that they care. Very few servers have a thorough check by a skilled security expert at any time in their serviceable lifetimes. That would change if users didn't passively assume by default that everything is fine until things go sour.

Many people ask me," where can I find free antivirus software." The easiest and fastest way to find free malware removal software is to simply do a search on Google. Type in something like, "free antivirus software," and click on the links.

There are many companies offering internet security programs for free, some are good, some are not so good, and some you should stay well clear of.

I have tried many free anti-virus programs but my favorite is the one provided by AVG. Their security suites seem to get better by the year with the most recent version (8.00) providing the most up to the minute online security prevention available.

Basically what it does is to tell you by means of a small graphic i.e. green tick that it is safe to go this website. So if you type the word, "Spyware removal "into Google's search box you will get a list of many sites offering this type of software.

Problem is many sites are offering what is termed, "rogue software." Basically what this means is that if for instance you were trying to remove some spyware on your laptop and downloaded one of these so called "spyware removers, then installed it on your PC, some of them may actually install malware onto your system instead of removing it.

AVG's safe surfing software can or should alert you to websites that may be offering this kind of sofware to you as a free download thus helping you to avoid installing it in the first place.

AVG was not the first company to make this kind of technology available. I first came came across it when McAfee security made it popular. By now you have probably worked out that I'm a fan of AVG. Although they are my personal preference, there are others out there to choose from.

There are others like Avast and Avira, which seem to have a good reputation and are used by many to protect their systems from worms, viruses and all types of malware infection.

Back full circle to, "where can I find free antivirus software." I hope that I have given you enough relevant information for you to spend a little time researching so you can make your own informed decision. Alternatively you may decide just to take my word for it and make the AVG free download page your first port of call.

Before spyware terrorized your computer, many people used to focus their efforts on avoiding the deadly virus. Since viruses almost became an inevitability, many companies tried to cash in by launching one anti-virus software after the other. Today, you have a different kind of problem that needs more harmful than a virolution quick and they are called spyware.

Now, spyware is becoming one of the most common headaches in a world dominated by digital technology. Users can easily acquire spyware by simpling logging on to a website and clicking a link. Even computers with an anti-virus software installed are not immune to spyware.

One of the most efficient ways to combat spyware is to install a highly recommended anti-spyware software on the computer and avoid the tempting websites that probably contain them.

Unlike a computer virus, spyware does not aim to destroy the contents of your hard disk. Instead, it penetrates your computer and some of your most sensitive information, such as credit card numbers and personal data.

Fortunately, anti-spyware software is as easy to get as the problem itself. There are so many programs available both on the Internet and on the market. There are numerous websites that offer downloadable programs free of charge, while many software companies have cashed in by launching their own products on the market.

Many websites have pop-up advertisements that offer all assortments of free products but beware when clicking one of them. Never give away information on the Internet, no matter how safe it seems. Otherwise, you might just end up as another victim of spyware.

Also avoid pop-up advertisements at all costs. These are one of the most annoying developments ever created for the Internet. Many browsers offer additional tools that would block windows from popping up. The best thing is that these programs are free.

You should never be complacent with any kind of computer product that claims to fight spyware. Always go the extra mile and take precautionary measures when it comes to personal information.

by Dark Sith

What are Computer Viruses?

Computer viruses are small programs that hide inside of your computer and then replicate themselves in some fashion in order to spread to other computers. With the internet connecting so many computers to one another, and our propensity to share many of our files with other people, we unknowingly transmit to other computers viruses that have infected our own files. Depending on the design of the virus, once it reaches a computer, it can do almost anything from deleting and corrupting your files, to disabling your computers security measures to make it more vulnerable to a hacker.

Types of Viruses

Computer Viruses can be divided into many different categories; Here are the most common, as well as a brief explanation of each one.

Resident Viruses

This is a type of virus that hides in your computer's RAM memory, controlling and intercepting operations carried out by the system, these are often used to capture passwords and credit card numbers and can corrupt files and programs.

Direct Action Viruses

The main objective of these viruses is to replicate themselves and take a particular action when they are run. When a pre-defined condition is met, the virus will spring into action and replicate itself. These viruses normally attach themselves to other files on your computer, so when the file is run - the virus is activated. Files infected with this type of virus can usually be fixed using anti-virus software.

Overwrite Viruses

When this type of virus infects a file, it deletes all of the information contained within that file and then copies itself into it. In other words, these will gut your files and then wear their clothes. Files infected with this type of virus become useless and can't be recovered without restoring a previous backup.

Boot Viruses

This type of virus infects the boot sector of your disk drives. The boot sector is a part of the disk that stores basic system information and is used to start your computer. These viruses are then loaded on boot-up. Please note that this kind of virus does not affect files. The best way to avoid boot viruses is to write-protect your floppy disks and never start your computer with an unknown floppy disk in the drive. Most antivirus programs can detect and remove these.

Macro Viruses

Certain programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Powerpoint have the ability to use small 'helper' programs to extend their functionality and automate repetitive tasks. These 'helper' programs are known as macros and scripts and are stored in the document files instead of the main program. A macro virus is simply a virus that hides out in these files and waits for you to open them with their respective programs - which then run the virus.

File Infectors

This type of virus infects programs and/or executable files. Each time one of these programs runs, the virus is activated; the majority of existing viruses belong to this category, and are classified depending on the actions that they carry out. Think of these viruses as stowaways on your computer's files.

Choosing an Antivirus Software

Antivirus software is one of the most important things you should have on your system. Many PC's come with this software pre-installed, but you should still take a few moments to familiarize yourself with it. There are many available antivirus programs currently on the market. Here, I've compiled some of the best retail and free antivirus solutions for you.

McAfee Antivirus (Retail) - McAfee provides a great antivirus solution. This US based company is maybe the oldest antivirus development company in the world, and in this area experience is king, especially when you're dealing with high-tech menaces.

Norton Antivirus (Retail) - Norton Antivirus, commonly known as Symantec Antivirus, is one of the best antivirus solutions available, even though it's also one of the "heaviest", meaning your system may run slower after installing it, specially if you haven't upgraded lately.

Avast Antivirus (Free!) - Avast Antivirus is a lightweight and free (for home use) solution. They are a newer company but have gained much ground because their software is free and easy to use.

AVG (Free!) - Much like Avast, AVG is a light, easy to manage antivirus package, automatically updated, and provides maybe the best shield protection you may need, without even noticing its presence. What to Do if You Think You Have a Virus

If your computer is running unusually slow, complaining with lots of errors, random reboots, blue error screens, or tons of pop-up windows - chances are good that you have picked up some spyware or a virus.

In this case it's better to stop and think before acting.

What should you do?

1. Stop all your work, close all your files and opened windows.

2. Run your antivirus software to make sure it is operable; do this even before updating it with the latest virus definitions.

3. Update your antivirus with the newest virus definitions and run it again.

4. If your system is still complaining, check it for spyware.

Don't, in any case, start deleting files and programs as you're likely to cause even more harm. This is a good time to backup all your data if you don't have any backups already. Even if you back up data infected with a virus, there is a good chance that it can be recovered and this will spare you from loosing important files if your first effort to identify and remove the virus fails.

What if a Virus Doesn't Let You Access Your Antivirus Software?

If you're getting an error when you try to open you antivirus software, it is very likely the result of a virus on your machine. There are 3 ways to deal with this.

1. Use a rescue disk. Most antivirus programs will ask you to create a 'rescue disk' during their installation, if you did this and know where you put the disk, put it into your PC and reboot. These rescue disks load the antivirus software before any other programs (including windows). If they can load before the virus, then they can find and neutralize it.

2. Use online antivirus software. Many antivirus companies provide free online tools that you can run from their web site's in these emergency situations; Here are just a few: * Avast Virus Cleaner * Kaspersky online virus scanner * Trend Housecall * Panda Activescan

3. Carefully remove your disk drives and install them on another PC, or access them through a network, then use another system to scan the drives.

When to get professional help

If you've been through all of this and your PC is still sinking like the titanic, then it's time to call in reinforcements. Don't have a friend or family member who's a computer whiz? That's ok, because there are plenty of companies which are more than happy to take your PC and clean it up for you, check in your local phone book under "Computers; Repair and Service".

When pricing these services, approach them the same way you approach finding a garage you take your car to - get hourly rates and find a place that will take a look at your PC and give you a free estimate.

Spyware and other types of malware are more than just a pain in the neck - they can cause other programs to malfunction and even make your computer unstable. And of course there's all the privacy issues that go along with it.

This type of software is often installed without a user's consent and often can't be uninstalled without special tools. When distributors use tricks and deception to install uninvited software, trust is destroyed.

The first line of defense against spyware is to be careful installing software. Know what's being downloaded. A large percentage of freeware or shareware programs have spyware embedded in them. Sometimes that's disclosed in the user agreement, but often not.

Check for a guarantee that the software is spyware free. This won't protect you 100%, but it is a good step towards being able to trust a website.

How can you tell if you have spyware on your system? You may see pop-up advertisements even when you aren't browsing the web. Your homepage may have been changed without your consent. New toolbars are installed on your web browser which you didn't request. Your computer may be sluggish or mysteriously reboot on its own. Though, the last effect is usually a virus.

If your system does get hit with a spyware attack, all is not lost. There are several software utilities made for getting rid of it. These programs have a database of known spyware that gets updated on a regular basis as new ones are found. They'll scan your computer to see if anything from this database is installed on it.

Many are free, though sometimes the paid versions have more automation features such as removing spyware on receipt rather than requiring a manual scan. None will find every piece of spyware on your system, since they rely on a database which has to be populated according to someone's judgment. And, one man's spyware is sometimes another's welcomed advertiser.

Some spyware is notoriously difficult to remove. They may make several alterations to your system settings and install files in different places. Often the only way to remove this type of spyware is to find the locations of all the files and manually delete them.

Needless to say, this should be performed only by skilled users. Deleting the wrong files can damage your programs and even your operating system.

Once your system is spyware free - help keep it that way. Some of the spyware removal tools include utilities that can protect your computer from being exposed to spyware. Much like virus scanners, they monitor changes to your system files and alert you of any suspicious activity.

Of course, you need to always be wary of anything you download. You never know when there is going to be a significant cost to that free software that looks so cool.

The convenience of computers has also brought about several problems like identity theft. Some people may choose to ignore these until they themselves become victims. Spyware is one of the main concerns when it comes to identity theft since spyware is very capable of stealing personal information like credit card and bank account numbers. It is very important that spyware be immediately removed or deleted from an infected computer before it causes any harm or damage.

Spyware is not easy to remove from a computer. A batch of spyware can embed themselves within programs and others even imitate other programs to avoid detection. To make things worse, there are millions of different types of spyware wandering around the internet; looking for computers to infect. Some even insert themselves in seemingly innocent websites so beware and be aware.

Manually removing a single spyware is quite complicated. You have to view all the registry files then proceed to temporarily stored internet files in your computer. It could take you almost an hour if you manually removed a single spyware and the bad news is, these malicious programs often come in batches.

Anti-virus programs and firewalls will not be able to detect spyware since spyware has a different programming framework from viruses. Your best bet to remove spyware is to install a reputable anti-spyware program in your computer. Anti-spyware programs are specifically designed to detect and remove spyware en route to a computer that is 100% spyware free. There are free anti-spyware programs all over the internet but they are not nearly as good as the ones being sold by software stores, so make sure that you purchase an anti-spyware software if you have a several dollars to spare.

If your computer has no anti-spyware program, purchase one as soon as possible. You will never know when the next spyware attack is going to happen. Protect your computer and the integrity of your personal files with an exceptional anti-spyware software. Happy surfing!

by Paul Wilcox

Less like the key, really, than a car - browsers provide the means for traveling around the Internet to interesting destinations. Unfortunately, sometimes uninvited passengers climb in. On rare occasions, they even 'carjack' you.

The question is, what can you do to stop them?

There are a number of options, the first of which is the browser software you choose to use. Microsoft's Internet Explorer still has the lion's share of the market, but it's losing ground to other, more secure browsers such as Firefox.

Even if they're not actually more secure, these other browsers are not as likely to be targeted simply because the people who attack them prefer to go where they'll get the biggest bang for the buck. Until laws change and software vendors get more serious about the security of their products, the best way to avoid being targeted is to lay low.

Education is another key to 'hardening' browser security.

There are a lot of options and setting in Internet Explorer (and most other browsers) that allow you to have more control over what is allowed and what isn't. The trouble is, most people have little to no idea how to set them properly.

For example, should you disable Javascript, leave it enabled or set it up to prompt you every time a website uses it? In this particular example, it depends on your tolerance for annoyance. If you disable it entirely, some websites just won't work. And if you set it to prompt you, you may get a lot of messages popping up if you frequent sites that use it.

This is the sort of trade-off that is a pain in the neck and hopefully won't be necessary one day. For now, however, you should do some reading to learn more about these settings and how they affect you. If your computer ever crashes because of some internet security attack, you'll wish you'd spent the time to learn it.

Another important factor here is how you use your browser. If a warning message pops up when you're on a website, do you just click OK and move on or do you actually read it? Unless you know for a fact that you can trust the site, it's always best to be thorough.

Most users are unaware of the extent to which using a browser opens up their system to the rest of the world. Being on the Internet means not just seeing, but being visible. And accessing sites usually means being accessible. It isn't just harmless cookies that can be downloaded to your system. Once executable programs are downloaded they often have free rein to your entire system.

Making the time to learn how to protect your computer will pay off in spades when you don't get hit with the next big virus or spyware problem.

You might have learned your lesson from a previous nasty experience with a computer virus. Or maybe, you've been pushing your luck by downloading various files or opening those email messages sent to you by people you don't know. Either way, it seems that you have no real understanding what you are doing or of just how vulnerable you really are each time you log onto your computer. In this article I am going to give you the opportunity to discover what steps you can take to avoid such annoying and many times destructive infestations.

I have put together 10 tips that you can follow in order to avoid being infected by a nasty virus that could potentially turn your PC into a disaster zone.

1. Get yourself some antivirus software from a respected company such as Norton Antivirus software. You should set it up to run automatically every time you turn your computer on.

2. Your anti virus software must be kept up to date. You can do this by checking it manually on a weekly basis, or on some software, this can be set up automatically for you.

3. You can also set up your software to automatically scan for viruses each time you open a word document that you recieve through email. This virus is called a Macro Virus.

4. Downloading software from the internet should not be done too often. It is very easy to get infected this way, even though there may be lots of great programs available This is very risky.

5. Tansfering data between storage devices like usb drives and discs, should only be done if really neccessary and they should be scanned for viruses before you install the data onto your machine.

6. When tranferring data using a floppy disc, the disc must be formatted first.

7. Don't install any software that hasn't been purchased from a well known and trusted vendor.

8. Never install software that is pirated. This is not only illegal but also a great way to get infected with a virus.

9. Before you open and install a program you have downloaded of the internet, ALWAYS scan them for computer viruses.

10. Probably the most important and neglected method of disaster recovery are periodic backups of all important files found on your computer. Should a virus happen to get through your lines of defense you may need to replace the virus corrupted files with fresh ones that have been kept for such an occasion.

I can't guarantee, if you follow the step that I advise, that you won't get a computer virus, but I can promise you that it will be a less likely occurence by far.

Spyware really is the most dangerous software on the planet. Never before have thieves been able to steal personal information like bank accounts, credit card information and passwords all from the comfort of there own home. Not only that but they also wreck havoc on your computer. I hate it and it has personally cost me three computers already. So hopefully this article will give you the steps you need to protect your computer and your personal info.

Ok explain what spyware is?

If you are not computer savvy well spyware is a specially designed piece of software that will collect surfing habits and personal information once it has entered your PC. There are also certain types of spyware that can remain hidden in your computer until the owner of the program has given the command to activate. Once the command has been given you will start experiencing symptoms like pop ups appearing while not connected to the internet, computer running slow and not being able to connect to your usual home page to name a few. If this is the case well the chances are you are infected with some type of spyware.

What can I do?

Ok the first thing you should be thinking of is getting your self some software to remove any threats that are present on your computer. If you don't have the money at present there are a few free spyware removal tools available. Two such programs are Ad aware and Spy bot. Now please remember these are free software programs, my advice is to get a paid spyware removal software once you have the money. But for now just use one of mentioned programs above to at least remove what spyware they will detect. Then just clean out your computer.

So now that you have a spyware free computer lets look at some other types of software to help protect you and your PC even further.

Pop Up Blockers

Pop up blockers are a vital piece of software in preventing spware from entering your computer. Why is that? Let me explain. I'm sure you have come across pop ups while surfing the net, but one of the things i think people don't understand is they can be used as another tool to gain entry to your computer and plant spyware. You see once it appears on the web page your are surfing generally people think that pushing the X button closes the pop up and that's the end of it. But trust me that is not all ways the case. The X button can be changed to OK or Download with out you even knowing about it. While it stills looks like the close button you are actually giving the program permission to download. It will then proceed to plant spyware on your PC. In the event of this happening the best course of action to take is to log of the net immediately before the download completes. So you can see why blocking the pop up in the first place will prevent spyware from entering you computer. There are free pop up blockers available so get one installed immediately.

Anti-virus software

This type of software is a must and if you don't have some type of anti-virus on your computer then you really are a sitting duck just waiting to be picked off. Anti-virus software will detect any Trojans, worms and key loggers trying to get into your system when you download a certain program or product. You can also scan any e-mails you receive from an unknown sender. But the best thing to do is just delete any mail from your inbox that your not expecting or don't know who its from.

Register Cleaners

Register cleaners are the perfect software for cleaning out your computer. If you have removed some spyware or any software programs recently it will detect and delete any unused files that may have been left behind. It will also clean out your temporary Internet files, your cache and your browser's history. You will be surprised how much this will speed up your computer.

Last of all make sure you have a Firewall Installed

Firewalls are your best protection against hackers. If you leave an opening on your computer hackers can gain access to your computer and practerlly do as the wish? Hackers are extremely good at what they do and if you store personal info on your PC they will find it. Now if you don't store that type of info on your computer, well they will simply install and hide some spyware designed to activate when you visit certain websites of their choice. So the next time you are doing your banking or making an online purchase the spyware will activate itself and gather all your personal information and send it back to the hacker. This will result in Identity theft!!

Ok if you install all these types of software programs on your computer your personal info and Pc should be pretty safe. There are new types of spyware hitting the Internet every day so just make sure to update the software at least once a week.

by Ted Hastings

The report of the Byron Review, "Safer Children in a Digital World" has generally been well-received, and rightly so. It offers a balanced view which takes account of both the dangers and the benefits of children using the internet, and it makes a number of useful and practical suggestions which could be implemented to reduce the dangers.

Unfortunately, the report suffers from one astonishing omission - it does not mention that a certificated Internet Safety course has been available since 2006 from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and is widely taught in Scottish schools and further afield. It is believed to be the only course of this nature developed by a national awarding body in the EU.

The course isn't only for schools - it's also offered to adults, including parents, teachers and youth workers through evening classes in many further education colleges. Strathclyde Police Force has used it for training police cadets and it has also been offered to around 4000 pupils in Manchester schools. A complete online package of teaching and assessment materials is available from SQA and a purpose-written textbook entitled "Internet Safety Skills", has been published by Scotland's leading educational publishers, Leckie and Leckie.

It is strange that the report fails to mention this course, particularly since various other examples of good practice are described, including an Irish project. The importance of improved education for both children and parents is emphasised throughout the report, yet it does not mention that a suitable course, complete with all the required materials, is already available.

Every Education Authority in the UK could adopt this course immediately, rather than waiting, perhaps for years, until alternative courses are developed. This could reduce the exposure of millions of children to online dangers and to increase their parents' knowledge of Internet hazards and how to avoid them.

The SQA course is interesting and engaging, while remaining highly practical. It provides information about the safety precautions which should be taken when using the Internet, and gives students practical experience in taking these. It is suitable for a variety of individuals, especially young people, parents and mature Internet users.

The first part of the course considers the threats that can exist when using the Internet, including malicious programs (eg: viruses, trojans, worms, adware, spyware and rogue diallers), hackers, spam, phishing, identity theft and emerging threats such as ransomware. It emphasises threats to user safety including grooming, inappropriate behaviour and cyberbullying, and notes that these threats can appear in a variety of contexts, eg: social networking sites, chat rooms, e-mail and instant messaging.

The second section covers safety precautions which should be taken including firewalls, anti-virus and e-mail filtering software and Internet security suites. Precautions for maintaining user safety include content filtering, proxy servers, monitoring and reporting user behaviour and withholding personal information.

The third part considers some of the legal aspects of using the Internet, including copyright, data protection, digital rights management, software licensing schemes (such as freeware and shareware(, legal constraints on the construction of websites (including disability discrimination legislation) and legislation relating to illegal content (such as racist, terrorist and pornographic material. It also examines child protection legislation which prohibits grooming and inappropriate behaviour towards minors.

The last part focuses on providing practical experience of taking relevant safety precautions. Students are expected to install and configure anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, firewalls, spam filters and internet security suites and to show that they can take additional precautions for maintaining user safety, including content filtering, proxy servers, monitoring and reporting user behaviour and withholding personal information.

Many people will be happy to simply follow the content of the course and improve their knowledge of Internet Safety. Those who wish to do so can be assessed and, if successful, be awarded a certificate by SQA. The assessment consists a short multiple choice test, which can be taken online, and a log recording the practical work carried out during the course, which can be submitted in electronic format, eg: as a blog or an online portfolio.
